A rugby match in the Australian league yesterday drew 52,000 people, which is believed to be the largest audience at an event in the world since the coronavirus outbreak.

The bleachers at Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane were packed with people as the local Queensland Maroons team faced the New South Wales Blues in the final third game of the rugby league in Australia.

Images of the match are now going around the world and are attracting levies to say the least, write the British BBC and The Independent, among others.

While audiences in other parts of the world have been left out of the stands at cultural and sporting events during the pandemic, New Zealand and Australia have viewed it differently.

Part of the reason is, of course, that the infection pressure is now lower. In the region where the game was played, in Queensland, in northeastern Australia, there are now only 12 active recorded cases of infection that exceed five million inhabitants, according to figures from the Australian Health Authority.

Before the match, local Queensland authorities, according to the BBC, announced that they are increasing the number of spectators allowed from 75 percent of the stadium’s capacity to 100 percent at outdoor events.

– I suppose the people of Queensland will be very, very happy with this decision. Let’s fill the stadium and cheer on our beloved Maroons, said the Mayor of Queensland, according to the Irish Times.

Something special also is that Queensland is hermetically sealed and the border with the Sydney region in the south is still closed due to the crown.

A packed stadium here would mean more than 52,000 indoors, something several of the reports, such as from the BBC, say it was.

Other sources, such as The Independent, believe that more than 49,000 people were present.

Photographs from New Zealand attract attention. Over 47,000 people came to a Superbowl in rugby.

In times of crown, another detail of the battle and the assistance can also attract attention:

By 2000 of the tickets were distributed to healthcare workers and heroes on the front lines during the fight against coronavirus, as thanks for the work they have done during the pandemic.

Yesterday’s large crowd did not go unnoticed. Reactions are reaching social media, both positive and negative.

One writes for ekSsempel, according to The Sun:

Look at the crowd in Australia. Are they on the same planet as us? To be moved when I see it and think of the condition as our sport is. “

Negative reactions

But far from everyone is excited to see the photos of the rugby circus in Australia.

“I cannot leave Sydney because of my father’s heart operation. A friend of mine lost her father while she was in quarantine. While the rugby league brings together thousands,” writes a local resident, according to the Daily Mail.

“This is a ridiculous decision when the number of people allowed at weddings, funerals and churches on Sundays is limited,” writes another.

Also last month, a huge crowd gathering made headlines when a rugby match drew 46,000 spectators in New Zealand, at a national game against Australia at Eden Park in October.
