Norway’s right-back and vice captain Omar Elabdellaoui (28) was quarantined on Friday after a positive corona test.
Elabdellaoui gave a negative corona test before traveling to Norway and performed three new tests in Norway. The third test, which he conducted on Thursday, was positive.
As a result, Friday’s training was canceled and the NFF had to make an assessment of what they should do in the future. On Sunday, expect an away game against Romania, before the Norwegian team move to Austria for a possible fateful match on Wednesday.
Elite league players not included
On Friday night, the NFF confirms that they are traveling with a reduced staff.
It is the Norwegian elite league players who remain in Norway. This is because the quarantine rules for players are uncertain and in the worst case they had to be quarantined for ten days when they returned to Norway.

– There have been many discussions about sports and that people in Norway are concerned about the increase in infection. We take those signals seriously. We do not want to jeopardize the exceptions that we have been given. Therefore, we intend to leave players who play for Norwegian clubs under infection quarantine in Norway, explains Gro Tvedt Anderssen, director of communication and public relations, to Dagbladet.
The five players are Sondre Rossbach (Odd), André Hansen (Rosenborg), Marius Lode (Bodø / Glimt), Patrick Berg (Bodø / Glimt) and Markus Henriksen (Rosenborg).
This means, among other things, that Rune Almenning Jarstein will be Norway’s only goalkeeper on the trip, unless something happens before departure on Saturday morning.
The press release states that the NFF has considered that Norwegian players residing abroad can leave the country because they will not return to Norway.
That’s why they leave
The NFF relies on UEFA’s protocol on infection control and that the national team is handling the situation.
Omar Elabdellaoui tested positive in his third test after arriving in Norway. Today, all the Norwegian players were tested for the fourth time at the meeting, and all 33 test results that came in on Friday were negative.
– The upcoming Nations League matches mean a lot to us in sport. If we don’t line up teams, it means we lose two games. That means a missed opportunity to qualify for the World Cup. Of course, we are concerned about the increasing contagion situation in society. That is why we do everything possible in our daily lives not to expose others to risks, say Stefan Johansen and Martin Ødegaard on the captains team in the press release.
On August 8 this year, UEFA published a new set of rules due to the coronavirus. The regulations establish, among other things:
– Even if a national team has quarantined players, the match will go as planned if the team has 13 players, including a goalkeeper, available.
UEFA further writes that in the worst case it is possible to move matches, but adds a great reservation with the phrase: If possible.
In that case, UEFA may move the match to a neutral field within UEFA’s territory.
If, on the other hand, it is not possible to move the game, it is up to the UEFA control, ethics and discipline committee to decide what happens.
– The nation responsible for the match not being played will lose in the walkover. If the committee agrees that neither team can be blamed, there will be a tie in which the result of the match will be 1-0, 0-0 or 0-1, it says in the rules.
