– This is unbelievably good. I think he will do something with the interest in the Toppserien that is so even and close, says Sandviken coach Alexander Straus.
His team put the sticks in the wheel for gold-chasing Rosenborg on Saturday when two own goals brought the match to a 1-1 finish. It helps ensure that we now have a fully open – and unusually exciting – battle for the final round decision next weekend.
Equally
Saturday’s results in Toppserien mean that three teams can now win gold: Vålerenga, Rosenborg and Avaldsnes.
– It’s almost impossible to make it more exciting than it was today, says NRK expert Carl Erik Torp.
Because at the same time that Rosenborg raged against Sandviken, Vålerenga suffered a surprise defeat against Lyn. The result was 3-2.
Vålerenga would have won the Toppserien today if he had taken three points at the same time as the other two lost.
But then Avaldsnes Klepp smashed the whole 3-0, and with points losses to RBK and VIF, they abruptly entered the gold match again, in the last minute.
Before the last round of the series, Vålerenga and Rosenborg have the same number of points (35 points), with Avaldsnes only one point behind in the table. Vålerenga has four more goals on goal difference than Rosenborg, and therefore has a small favorite before the last round.
Point out lack of experience
But Torp notes that the league leader showed clear signs of weakness against Lyn on Saturday.
– And next weekend comes Arna-Bjørnar, who has nothing to play for other than trying to ruin a Vålerenga a bit who will surely play with his shoulders a bit high. That doesn’t just happen on its own, says Torp.
Vålerenga coach Jack Majgaard Jensen is talking about something similar. He believes the lack of experience of being in such a situation was largely the reason for the loss to Lyn on Saturday.
– We are not a team that has won a series before, and we do not know exactly how to react to it. Today we do not react like a team used to winning. We get overly stressed, and then it’s like this, he says.
However, Torp still has Vålerenga as a favorite.
– I said Vålerenga before the season and I have said it all the time. They seem stronger, he says.
LSK Women is the current league champion, and in recent years has won the series by a solid margin. This year they have been hooked for a long time.
– It is a great advantage for the product that it will be exciting, and it will also be interesting for many more involved. I also think it will be the norm in the future, says Torp.
RBK profile Lisa Marie Karlseng Utland was way down after the draw against Sandviken.
– But it’s good that we still have a chance to take the gold. We must be disappointed now, so it’s just a matter of driving into next Sunday, she says.
All games in the last round are played on Saturday at 3pm.
