- Manchester United 0-1 Arsenal (0-0)
Just three points were enough for Ole Gunnar Solskjær (47) and Manchester United against Arsenal tonight. It was the 15th team in the Premier League against the 12th team.
But coach Mikel Arteta and Arsenal did not come to Old Trafford to stand with a hat in hand. The team was the best in the first half, and was also led in the 69th minute by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The goal came from a penalty, after Paul Pogba, clumsily, committed a foul on Héctor Bellerín.
0-1 was also the end result. Thus, Manchester United’s nightmare at home continues. The team haven’t won a single one of four games at Old Trafford this season.
And the table placement doesn’t look good. The team was going to climb from 15th place in the table, but stayed on after a failed night. Until Liverpool there are nine points.
– I can’t give away penalties that way. But we must also produce more opportunities. We have to find a way to improve, says Paul Pogba, who calls for greater stability in the team.
– We never showed up for the first time. The intensity and rhythm weren’t there, says Solskjær.
– They were better than us and created some decent chances. In the second half, it didn’t seem like they were going to score, except for the penalty. We played better in the second half, but we have to arrive with greater intensity, declares the Norwegian.
Solskjær and United went into the game in pain. On Sunday afternoon news came that club legend Sir Bobby Charlton (83) had been diagnosed with dementia.
Charlton played 758 games for United from 1956 to 1973, and was among those who survived the Munich crash in 1958. A statement from the club reads:
– Everyone at Manchester United is saddened by the terrible illness that has afflicted Sir Bobby Charlton. We continue to offer love and care to Sir Bobby and his family.
Sir Bobby’s seat was, of course, empty tonight.
The first half was even, but with a small advantage from Arsenal. The closest was Willian, who fired off the crossbar six minutes before the break. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could have also given the visitors the lead early in the round.
But nothing happened on the scoring front until 21 minutes before the end. Paul Pogba – who started for the first time in the Premier League in a month – provided a penalty when he fouled Héctor Bellerín.
The penalty was good. Aubameyang shot down the right, while goalkeeper David de Gea shot the other way.
Manchester United pushed in the latter part of the game but never managed to catch up. This was Arsenal’s first league win at Old Trafford since 2006.
Solskjær’s 100th game as Manchester United manager was not a pleasant experience.
– Very big, says the winner of the Aubameyang match.
– It was a hard night, but I am very happy that the team did well. It’s been a long time since we last won here.
– We haven’t won here in 14 years. “It was a huge boost for us,” says Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
