Tennis star Novak Djokovic reveals he was way down before meeting Lorenzo Sonego.

World number one Novak Djokovic was a huge favorite and had a 1.02 odds with the bookmakers ahead of Friday’s meeting with Italian Lorenzo Sonego in Vienna.

However, the Serbian was swept off the field in straight sets, and tennis experts around the world scratched their heads when the scoreline showed 6-2, 6-1 in favor of Sonego at the end of the match.

Until the defeat in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Austria, Djokovic had only lost two matches in 2020, one in the Roland-Garros final against Rafael Nadal and the other when he was disqualified at the US Open.

After the match, Djokovic spoke about what may have contributed to the sensational result.

Grief for death

Amfilohije Radovic (83), a key figure in the Serbian Orthodox Church, a man Djokovic knew personally, had passed away the same day.

– To be honest, I didn’t feel like playing. The sad news affected me, but not in such a way that I couldn’t play. This was certainly a strange day, Djokovic said according to Tennis Majors.

Djokovic now travels home to his family in Serbia, before starting preparations for the final Nitto tournament in London, where the top eight players of 2020 will settle amongst themselves.

– I hope I can spend time with the family now. Then I will have a good preparation for London so that I have a strong season finale, said Djokovic.

– He took me out of the field

However, he gave Sonego all the credit to Sonege for what he accomplished in the battle of his life in Vienna on Friday afternoon.

– He took me off the field. He was better than me in every segment of the game. It was a pretty bad fight on my part, but a fantastic fight on his part. He definitely deserved this result, Djokovic said according to the ATP.

The Serbian is currently 39-3 in 2020, but has only won one of the three Grand Slam tournaments that have been held.

The 33-year-old rose to the top of the Australian Open in January, before being disqualified for hitting the ball on a linesman in September. In October, Rafa Nadal became too strong in Paris.

The fourth Wimbledon Grand Slam tournament was canceled this year due to the crown situation.
