Rashford and Fernandes came in after just over 60 minutes of play, and until then it had been a round and a half of small-scale soccer from both teams.
But from then on there were completely different rhythms, with United scoring four goals in 25 minutes.
– It’s almost unreal how fast United goes when they win the ball. What they have done in the last 30 minutes has been masterful, says Viasat expert Lars Tjærnås.
– The best I’ve seen from United under Solskjær, says Jan Åge Fjørtoft in Viasat’s study about the mentioned 30 minutes.
Three of the goals came from Rashford.
– That man is a quality player. Fantastic speed, balance. He dribbles and the shots are fantastic, says Rune Bratseth.
Rashford says Solskjær asked him to come in and speed up the game.
– I wanted to increase the pace. There were rooms and today we got to the passing game. So we are very dangerous, says Rashford in an interview shown on Viasat.
VAR fringe decisions
However, United were already leading 1-0 after scoring Mason Greenwood in the first half, a goal that had to be reviewed by the VAR before being approved. Television footage showed Greenwood well inside the offside line.
The VAR had to make a change in the 75th minute. He stood in his own half of the field when Fernandes played it beautifully, he took off running alone towards the goal, only to be sent off from play after the ball entered the net.
But after a review of the video footage, it was clear that United once again had the margins on their side, and this goal was also approved.
– You can not ask for more
Three minutes later, Rashford scored again and five minutes later, Anthony Martial made it 4-0 from the penalty spot. Finally, Rashford completed his hat trick when he made it 5-0 a few minutes before the end.
– We can’t ask for more than this. Today was true, says Rashford.
Solskjær surprised with the team selection against Leipzig, and started with new acquisition Donny van de Beek, who has played shortly after the transfer from Ajax.
However, United were never threatened by Leipzig, who only had two shots on goal in the match.
Norwegian Alexander Sørloth sat on the bench early on for the German team, but was replaced after 66 minutes, undistinguished.
Things were better for the other two Norwegians who were in action in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Erling Braut Haaland scored a goal when Dortmund beat Zenit St. Petersburg 2-0, and Tokmac Nguen scored a goal when Ferencváros saved a point against Dinamo Kiev. The match ends 2-2.
