Braathen was in fifth place after the first round in the giant slalom opening in Sölden, and in the second round he did even better.
The 20-year-old made a little mistake along the way, but the rest of the ride was very offensive. Gino Caviezel, who led after the first half and was the last out of the rivals, was clearly nervous and failed to deliver.
Braathen thus achieved his first victory among the greatest. It was also Norway’s first victory at Sölden since Aksel Lund Svindal won there in 2007.
– Sure, Braathen yelled as he came in to lead from fifth position.
– Too much to ask for
Braathen was finally 5/100 ahead of Swiss Marco Odermatt and another 41/100 ahead of Caviezel on the Rettenbach glacier.
– Is it too much to ask. I know that I am strong mentally and that I am good technically. I knew I could get on the podium, but, man, this is absolutely incredible, he says in the official interview of the victory, broadcast on TV 2.
When the journalist asked if we could glimpse the future since Braathen and Swiss talent Odermatt took the top two places on the podium, the answer was:
– You can bet on that!

NRK and TV 2 expert Nina Haver Løseth believes today’s win is just the beginning for the man from Hokksund.
– It gives me chills to look at it. You will see that you are hungry to drive fast, it says on TV broadcast 2.
Braathen made his way in many ways at Sölden last season. Then it became number ten. This year he took the step to the end.
Henrik Kristoffersen was the best of the Norwegians after the first round, with his third place, but failed to reach the second round and finished in a shared fifth place.
Unfortunate source
Leif Kristian Nestvold-Haugen retained his eighth place after the first half. Fabian Wilkens Solheim went out on the second lap.
Last season’s World Cup overall winner Alexander Aamodt Kilde started from third place in the first round and passed as best man in the first half. Maybe it was too cool, because Kilde drove before reaching the second half time.
– I got off to a good start, but then my shoe slipped, I ran into the pole and the tie came loose. There are small margins. It wasn’t the case that he gambled too much, Kilde told TV 2.
