A new bombardment has hit the regional capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, despite the ceasefire aimed at stopping the fighting between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Seven powerful explosions shook the city of Stepanakert around 11:30 p.m. local time on Saturday, the AFP news agency reports.

The plane’s alarm went off to warn residents to seek shelter in basements and other safe havens.

The ceasefire was negotiated with the help of Russia overnight to Saturday and entered into force at 12 pm on Saturday.

Minutes later, the two parties accused each other of breaking it.

A representative of the authorities in the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region said Azerbaijani missiles had hit civilian areas in Stepanakert, which is the capital of Nagorno-Karabakh, NTB wrote early Saturday.

The region is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but in practice it is an autonomous republic with an Armenian population that enjoys strong Armenian support.

A ceasefire was also signed between the parties in 1994 and the status of the area has not yet been clarified.

The case is being updated.
