Apocalyptic: Washed Dead

Since Friday, twelve people have died in the flood that has devastated the mountainous areas of the border between France and Italy.

Four of the dead have been found on the French side of the border and eight in Italy.

Several villages are cut off from the outside world after heavy rains. More than 600 rescue teams search for 20 missing.

A spokesman for the Alps-Maritime area, which has been hit hard by the floods, says the dead are now being washed away by the rain, and many of them have turned up on the Italian side of the border.

According to The Guardian, the theory is that the bodies were dragged from cemeteries higher up in the French mountains.

The spokesman notes that the bodies had come a long way in decomposition and that they could thus be separated from the victims of the storm.

– Apocalyptic

Freelance journalist Johan Rouquet writes on Twitter that 150 dead have been dragged away. Efforts are now being made to identify them.

38 houses in Saint-Martin-Vésubie have been taken over by the masses of rain. Another 30 houses “are balanced on the edge of the precipice”, reports the radio channel France Info. Around 250 people have been evacuated. Several are without water, telephone coverage and electricity.

– It’s apocalyptic. Much of the city below the cemetery disappeared. A friend of mine buried his father there not long ago. Now the grave is gone. It’s also the garage, says a man named Michel to the radio channel.

Local authorities say that the cemeteries in the town of Tende have also been partially washed away by the rain. Mayor Jean-Pierre Vassallo told Le Parisien newspaper that the town’s cemetery “was divided in two.”

The wolves are missing

Seven Canadian wolves have disappeared after the flood left a natural park north of Nice in ruins.

The French Office for Biological Diversity (OFB) has warned that wolves could starve to death if they are not found. Two OFB employees and a veterinarian are searching the area by helicopter.

– It is a priority to find and catch them, says the regional director of the OFB, Eric Hansen, to AFP.

One of the park’s polar wolves was found dead after the flood. According to Hansen, the other two polar wolves in the park are probably dead as well.
