Trondheim also hosted the World Ski Championships in 1997. The last time the championship was held in Norway was in 2011 with Oslo as the organizer.
This time, Trondheim was alone on the applicants list, and the award was more or less a mere formality. Trondheim should have been awarded the championship at this spring’s congressional meeting, but the crown pandemic meant that the FIS congress was postponed until October 4 and then until June 5, 2021.
– This is a happy day for Norwegian skiing. A WC will provide an improved facility in Granåsen that will inspire, delight and ensure activity for many years, both in width and area. The Ski-Norway team has supported Trondheim as a candidate for the World Cup, and now the dream has finally come true. We have a very good collaboration with the municipality of Trondheim and skiing in Trøndelag. “Together, we want to carry out a World Cup with a focus on sustainability, technological development, sports enjoyment and popular festivals,” says Ski President Erik Røste.
As early as the fall of 2014, the municipality of Trondheim signaled that it would run for the World Ski Championships in 2021. Guri Knotten was hired as a project manager, while Mayor Rita Ottervik became the leader of the application committee. On May 1, 2015, the Norwegian Ski Association officially launched Trondheim as a candidate.
But Trondheim was unsuccessful on his first attempt. On June 1, 2016, German Oberstdorf won the vote to win the championship in 2021. The city in the extreme south of Germany also beat Slovenian Planica on the road.
In October 2017, it was clear that Trondheim and Planica would fight to host the World Ski Championships in 2023, and on May 17, 2018, it was ready for a vote at the FIS congress. There, Planica won quite clearly against Trondheim.
The people of Trøndelag were determined not to give up, and the third time it was clear that they would. No opposing candidate entered the field and the final decision was made on Saturday that the Ski World Cup 2025 will be held in Granåsen.
Then the champagne could also bounce during an event in Trondheim. There were representatives of those who have participated in joint enforcement work, along with old posters, world hopes, politicians, sports politicians, businessmen, organizers and enthusiasts.
