Casper Ruud had to dig deep, but he finally managed to defeat American Tommy Paul after five difficult sets in Paris.
Casper Ruud advances to the third round of the legendary Grand Slam Roland Garros tournament after American Tommy Paul was defeated 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Dad and coach Christian Ruud are very happy with their son’s performance.
– It was kind of a roller coaster. He was a Tommy Paul who played tennis very well at times. He got off to a bit of a bad start and Casper did a bit well but took a step forward in the second set. I think he is a very good tennis player, so I am very happy with this victory, says Christian Ruud to Eurosport.
Thiem on this
In the semi-finals in Hamburg this weekend, Casper Ruud received treatment for a minor injury to his right arm, and Christian believes his son felt a bit too during the meeting with Paul.
– I think he feels it a bit on his arm – not much so hopefully it’s not a big deal, but it’s easy to think he’s too far back to go back from 1-4 and 1-5, so then save his little bit arm. Then he decides to bite the tooth at the end.
After the tough five-set, now awaits a meeting with Austrian star Dominic Thiem, popularly called “the prince of gravel.”
Thiem is ranked third in the world and recently won his first Grand Slam title when he headlined the US Open.
Ruud and Thiem have met once before, at Austria’s own Thiem’s Seven tournament in Kitzbühel in July. It ended with Thiem winning in two sets in a row.
From 6-1 to 1-6
In the first set, Casper Ruud was completely superior, and seemed to be heading for a good advance to the third round for the Norwegian.
However, after losing 1-6 in the first set, Paul rose steeply in the second.
The American began to serve his first serve, while Ruud did not play at the same level as before in the match. It finished 6-1 for Paul.
In an even third set, Ruud managed to break Paul in the eighth game. Thus he rose to 5-3, before serving home 6-3 with a blank game.
In the fourth set, the American struck back hard, breaking Ruud twice and clinching the set 6-1.
In the decisive fifth set, both players held serve until Paul served in the eighth game. Then Ruud managed to break the American.
Ruud admitted that he needed five match balls when he was going to serve home the win, but he did it in the end and is therefore in the third round.
