ULLEVAAL / BODØ (VG) Lars Lagerbäck (72) eliminates two rookies from the squad for the European Championship playoffs against Serbia. Jens Petter Hauge (20) and Leo Skiri Østigård (20) are promoted from the U21 team.
The national team coach introduced Hauge as one of four attacking players on the team, along with Alexander Sørloth, Erling Braut Haaland and Joshua King.
– I was able to prove myself as a striker against Holland U21, and it is a role in which I develop. I can also play a four in the middle. You have to adapt, Hauge says at a press conference in Aspmyra.
You think it’s smart not to lock yourself up on paper. Lagerbäck, known for his preference for 4-4-2, warned that it could surprise Serbia, and even mentioned formation options as one way to do it.
At the same time, he asked the assembly not to put too much into Hauge’s category as an attacking player.
X Factor
The withdrawal was not much of a surprise to Glimt’s wing, who will likely have to pull the trigger before taking the top spot early on for Norway.
– I talked a bit with Erling (Braut Haaland) and he thought they were going to take me out, says Hauge about the first step, a place in the team.

The 20-year-old from Bodø has impressed by the superb league leader this season and had a brilliant performance in Europa League qualifier against Milan on Thursday this week.
He was rewarded with a promotion from the U21 team to the A team for player Glimt.
– He has a bit of an x factor and we don’t have many of that type of player, says Lagerbäck about Hauge and describes the x factor as follows:
– One by one offensively. For challenging he can go both left and right and is quite agile. There you have your big x factor. So I don’t know him personally, but from what I’ve heard he seems to be mentally strong. It must be to be successful at this level.

Lagerbäck denies that the Milan agreement was decisive for the withdrawal.
– It is more his development after the start of the league. After the crown, he has taken steps and has developed, says the Swede.
Ole Selnæs is also out of the national team this time. Players in the Chinese league have been subject to strict crown restrictions and have not been allowed to reunite with their families since July. Lagerbäck admits that the 26-year-old “normally would have been on the team.”

Østigård rises
Lagerbäck introduced the 26-man squad on Monday morning. The Swede has eliminated more players than he used to have in previous troops. The reason is both the pandemic of the crown and that the national team will play three games in a short time.
Under-21 midfielder Leo Skiri Østigård will also be rewarded with a shot at the A squad when he plays three games in a short time in early October.
On defense, Stefan Strandberg and Sigurd Rosted are also back in the heat of the national team. Furthermore, Martin Ødegaard will now be rid of the knee problems that kept him out of the previous squad of the national team.
Norway will play three games at the Ullevaal Stadium between October 8-14.
Serbia will wait first in the semifinals of the European Championship playoffs on Thursday, October 8. Then two games await him against Romania (October 11) and Northern Ireland (October 14) in the Nations League, which therefore has something to say for qualification for the 2022 World Cup.
