Former record holder Ingvill Måkestad Bovim (39) believes her heiress Hedda Hynne (30) with her sensational best time of the year in the world is good enough to win a medal at an international championship.

– The step you have taken is great. A championship now would be very exciting. If he can run 1.58, he is a medal candidate. But it is not just a matter of time. Now he beats “this and that”. He knows that he can beat those in a championship final and that it may be good to beat them in the Olympic final next year, says Ingvill Måkestad Bovim.

On YouTube, he watched Hedda Hynne win the 800m with a time of 1.58.10 on Tuesday night at an international summit in Bellinzona, Switzerland, ahead of local favorites Selina Büchel (1.58.37) and Lore Hoffman. (1.58.50), as well as this year’s British comet Jemma Reekie (1.58.87), who before finishing fourth had the best time in the world this year with 1.58.63.

Hynnes time it is best in the world, Nordic record, Norwegian record. Ingvill Måkestad Bovim was the Norwegian record holder for 10 years at 1.59.82 when Hedda Hynne lowered it to 67/100 in Italy last week – to 1.59.15 – before hitting 1.58.10 in Galà dei Castelli.

It also means a sharp drop in his personal best, as it had been from July 2017 to Norway’s first record race in Italy last Tuesday: from 1.59.87 to 1.59.15 to 1.58.10, that is, 1.77 seconds.

– I knew it was good for 1.58.5, which would be close to 1.58 blank, it was a bit surprising. She is not two and a half seconds better than last year. Hedda was good enough for 1.59 blank then, but she never got “that run.” Now the conditions were very nice, with an extra good hare (cruise control), says coach Hedda Hynnes and co-resident Erik Sakshaug.

Hedda Hynne was the first Norwegian woman to run 800 meters at the Olympic Games when she did it in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. A year ago she was close to reaching the final of the Doha World Cup, after 2.01.03 in the semifinals. Halimah Nakaayi (25) of Uganda took the World Cup gold with a time of 1.58.04.

Subject to the fact that she “doesn’t know the details”, Ingvill Måkestad Bovim believes that Hedda Hynne’s advancement is due in part to long-term directed training and “close collaboration” between Hedda Hynne and Erik Sakshaug.

– Has constantly progressed and got better and better. I think she started training hard quite late, and I want to remember that when she was 14 she was not described as a super talent, says Ingvill Måkestad Bovim, who has participated with Hynne in the European Championships and now works as a nutritionist.

She explains that she saw that Hedda Hynne at the Stockholm Diamond League competition three weeks ago ran much worse than she actually could, and that “this would go fast” (soon).

– I know it’s been good for a long time. It was clearly visible in Stockholm, confirms Erik Sakshaug.

In poor condition and after a difficult race, Hynne finished third with 2.01.44, about two seconds behind winner Jemma Reekie.

– She has sharpened her form so far, and when everything is in order, she can use energy to run fast It was an orderly race in Switzerland. She might just shrug her shoulders, and when you get that feeling, it’s just fun. Then comes the ketchup effect, says Ingvill Måkestad Bovim.

Note that Hedda Hynne is a 400 and 800 meter runner, while she was a 1500 and 800 meter runner. The cushion is fast. She ran the first 400 meters in 57 seconds in Bellinzona. When asked what qualities are required to run two laps in less than two minutes, Ingvill Måkestad Bovim, who achieved his best position in his career with sixth place in the 1500 meters at the World Championships in 2011, answers that he is in shape, speed and “no less” acid tolerance.
