So says the promoter of Brækhus. Matchroom boxing in a press release. McCaskill will attempt to defend the five World Cup belts he won against Brækhus in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 15.
After losing for the first time as a professional boxer, Brækhus took some time to think about whether to resign or continue her career. The 38-year-old has now landed on the latter.
– It was the weakest performance of my entire career. Still, I feel like I won, or could have drawn, and when I thought about it, I knew I could beat her in a rematch, says Brækhus.
I lost my belts
She was a world welterweight champion in the five international boxing federations until she lost to McCaskill. Before that, she had won 36 consecutive professional games.
– I did not want to end with the worst achievement of my career. I don’t owe it to my fans. If it had been a match where I lost to a better opponent, if I had been in my best shape and given my all, then I could have given up. But that was not the case here, continues the Bergen man.
Brækhus lost the match on points with the referee’s votes 95-95, 93-97, 94-97. In hindsight, many were critical and various experts believed that the Norwegian champion should have won the match.
Not surprised
McCaskill had received signs that Brækhus would resign after the loss, but says he is not surprised that he has to go to a new match against the Bergen native, who will turn 39 later this month.
– We knew that he would return and that it was only a matter of time. Usually these statements come immediately after the game to divert the focus from defeat. In this sport, many have said they quit and then return to the box, says the American.
Only at the end of this year will it be known where and when the two boxers will meet again.
