Henriette Jæger (17) may be Norway’s next athletic star. Mamma Unn Merete Lie Jæger predicts a “bright future”, but the seven-year-old will not follow in Karsten Warholm’s footsteps just yet.
Athletes like Karsten Warholm and the Ingebrigtsen brothers have created a new golden age in Norwegian athletics. Since the 1990s, Norway has not experienced anything similar in the field of athletics, and all indications are that it is growing far behind today’s heroes.
Henriette Jæger of Aremark Idrettsforening in Østfold is considered perhaps Norway’s greatest athletic talent, completing the match of seven at Melløs Stadium in Moss on Sunday. And in a fantastic way.
The 17-year-old had an excellent starting point after Saturday’s competitions and did not disappoint as she chased the world record for under-18 athletes today.
The record was of the Spanish María Vicente with 6221 points. Now it is the Norwegian girl who has the best result in history for seven fighters under 18 with junior tools. Jæger’s new world record is 6301 points, breaking the previous record.
– It’s incredibly cool. It’s been in the back of my mind to get close to the record, but I never thought it would work, says Jæger brilliantly happy to VG.
I had to double check
During the competition, he saw that there were opportunities and he gave everything in the last exercise: 800 meters. In the end, he could hardly believe his eyes.
– I was so happy. I had to check it twice to be absolutely sure. He had previously raced with a hare, but hadn’t thought he was going to handle this weather with headwinds alone, the 17-year-old says.
The result provides great motivation for the future of Jæger, which has the Olympics as its great long-term goal.
– But first is the U-20 World Cup next year. I just want to keep developing as a practitioner.
In the last practice on Sunday, 800 meters, he had to run in 2.16.98 minutes or more to break the record. With a previous personal record of 2.11.82, it was a fair beating for athletic talent. In both the 800 meters, 110 meters and length, he set a personal record during the game of sevens.
And in case there were any doubts: Jæger won all the exercises during the circuit championship in Østfold.
Touched mother
She is trained by her mother, Unn Merete Lie Jæger.
– It’s incredibly big. It is moving. It has been a family project, where I am the closest coach. We’ve worked on this together and it feels great, says a hoarse mother on the phone.
– I have almost no voice left. There was a lot of screaming throughout the 800 meters, she laughs.
Jæger has already managed to be compared to former multiple wrestler Karsten Warholm. But unlike Sunnmøringen, the Jæger family has no plans to step up their efforts at the moment.
– For us, who work so closely, this is motivating, but there is much to do. I see a bright future. Nothing has been specialized and we will not specialize more. We want to work with the multiple fight. As long as we succeed, we will continue to do so, says Lie Jæger.
