– Forest fires like this are one of the clearest signs. We must see this as a powerful manifestation of climate change.
Tore Furevik, director of the Bjerknes Center for Climate Research at the University of Bergen, tells TV 2. He has no doubt that the wildfire that is creating total chaos and leaving entire neighborhoods desolate in Oregon, California, is has become more likely due to climate change. .
He cites the bushfires in Australia earlier this year and similar incidents in European countries like Spain and Portugal as other examples.
– These places have caused climatic changes that lead to drier soils. The chance of wildfires increases, he says, and it has a grim message.

Half a million on the run
Wildfires of historic magnitude are raging along the west coast of the United States. At least 16 people died and some 500,000 were evacuated in Oregon.
The number of evacuees became known when the Oregon Crisis Management Agency issued a new statement Thursday night.
More than ten percent of the state’s population is now fleeing the flames. The fires are occurring in an area of more than 360,000 hectares, which is a new record.
“We have never seen such a large number of wildfires in our state before,” Gov. Kate Brown said during a news conference later that day.
The fires in neighboring California are also unmatched in scope. One of them, the August Complex Fire, is larger than any other known fire in California history.
Many were lost
At least 10 people died in the North Complex Fire in Northern California. In Oregon, at least four people have died and, in addition, one death has been recorded in Washington state.
But it is feared that the number will continue to rise. Sixteen people are missing in Northern California and several areas are currently inaccessible to rescue teams.
Among those missing is an elderly couple who called their son and told him that they would seek refuge in a pond to escape the flames.
– We are still waiting and asking for good news, says Jessica Fallon, who has two children with one of the couple’s grandchildren.

Not just bad news
Director Furevik believes that the effects we see today were already predicted by climate researchers ten years ago and therefore should be seen as confirmation that climate change is a contributing factor.
– Is there no other explanation?

– There are probably other components to this, but there is no doubt that climate change increases the likelihood of wildfires occurring, he says.
Although the future may look bleak, Furevik still has good news.
– Emissions are not increasing as fast as they have. The worst predictions from the UN Climate Panel seem unlikely at this point. It seems like it’s not getting as bad as we first thought. Also, emissions are likely to start soon, if they aren’t already. Renewable energy has become cheaper and further outperforms fossil energy, says the researcher.
