The Norwegian tanker Grena Knutsen is stuck in a blockade at Lysekil in Sweden.
Greenpeace is responsible for the blockade, which prevents seven tankers from sailing to the Preemraff oil refinery.
Greenpeace protests against the expansion of the Preems oil refinery and believes it is a violation of the Paris Agreement.
– Grena Knutsen transports crude oil from the Gullfaks field through Preemraff and beyond in the world. Climate change does not stop at the Swedish border and the Norwegian government is responsible for the greenhouse gas emissions that we export. Norway is the world’s seventh largest CO2 exporter, amid an ongoing climate crisis. The emissions Norway exports are almost ten times higher than emissions here at home, says Frode Pleym, director of Greenpeace Norway.
The Swedish Coast Guard, the Swedish Maritime Administration and the police are in place.
Swedish police press spokeswoman Jenny Widén tells TT that the police are in their place and cooperating with the parties, and that it is too early to say whether any crime has been committed.
Greenpeace says CO2 emissions from the Lysekil refinery will increase by one million tonnes each year, if the Swedish government approves Preem’s request for expansion.
