Fredrik Solvang, The debate | Fredrik Solvang was verified: now he’s breaking Faktisk.no

Faktisk.no believes that Fredrik Solvang’s statement on pensions did not hold up. Now the host fights back strongly.

During the Tuesday night “Debate”, participants discussed the economic development of retirees. One of host Fredrik Solvang’s premises was that retirees have had “less to deal with” for six years in a row.

In reality, this claim has not been taken for granted and they have concluded that Solvang is wrong.

In short, it is about Faktisk. Not including taxes in its fact check, while Solvang relates to calculations by the Technical Calculation Committee where tax deductions are not included.

Did you get this with you?

Faktisk.no has consulted with Professor Emeritus Alf Erling Risa of the University of Bergen, who has investigated the effects of the Norwegian pension reform.

He confirms to Faktisk.no that when talking about the purchasing power of pensioners, or using the term “route with”, it is the calculations of the Technical Calculation Committee for real growth after taxes that give the best picture of the situation , he writes faktikt.no.

– Really bad

In a Facebook post published Friday morning, Solvang responds:

In fact, I have chosen (of all the important things in the world) to make a reality – check out my use of the term “route with” in an introduction to the pension debate. Here is an explanation why Faktisk is wrong:

In four of the last five years up to and including 2019, the growth in real income of pensioners has been negative. These are objective figures published by the Technical Calculation Committee. For 2020, there are only estimates to follow, but the estimate shows that retirees will have real income growth of minus 0.2.

Furthermore, Solvang writes:

“In fact, I choose to use an unpublished table (that I know of) from the Ministry of Finance for 2020, which shows that all households in 2020 according to the Government’s fiscal plan will leave with positive purchasing power. Everything is very good, long live if it hits , but taxes are completely individual, and in addition. In fact, here the observed and objective figures for the period 2015-2019 are mixed with the calculations for 2020. In NRK’s opinion, it cannot be done. “

– Cannot calculate a good fish

I was very conscious when I chose the term “route with”, precisely because it allows interpretation and because it is a popular concept that everyone understands. I can’t take it for granted that the Finance Ministry’s calculations suggest that all pensioners get more to route in 2020, as Actually does. “

Therefore, real income growth before tax is the best thing to deal with, says Fredrik Solvang, referring to negative real income development in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, and weak positive development in 2019.

“In fact, you claim that you cannot ‘route with’ the money you have already paid in taxes. That is correct, but since tax matters are very individual, I really don’t know what the net accounts of the individual pensioner will be like after Ergo: In fact, completely wrong, “concludes Solvang.

– An important fact check

– We think “route with” is what you are left with, and not as ambiguous as Fredrik Solvang suggests. Our verification shows that there is no basis to say that pensioners were left with nothing to do in 2019, 2017 and 2015. Therefore, we believe that this statement is incorrect, Kristoffer Egeberg, editor of Faktisk.no, tells Nettavisen.

Solvang also notes in its Facebook post that Faktisk.no writes that the Ministry of Finance’s calculations show that pensioners can get stronger by 2020.

– Of course we cannot verify this, it is probably Fredrik Solvang and we agree. But this was not the basis for our conclusion either. The TBU base is what everyone is based on, and then the statement in the Debate about what one has to face, or what remains, does not agree.

That Faktisk.no fact-check the statement “to route with” is not the least bit strange, the publisher believes:

– It is for the same reason that NRK chooses this topic for discussion. It is an important issue that worries many and deserves a good debate. So when NRK and Solvang present this premise and the government operates with completely different figures, it is only natural that we, as fact-checkers, try to find answers. That the statement gets a lot of attention is perfectly fine, and it’s great that the country’s biggest debating arena is shedding light on such an important issue, Egeberg says.
