The new Munch Museum in Bjørvika postpones opening until next year. The reason is the remaining work and the final takeover of the building by the contractor.

The museum was originally supposed to open this fall, but now the opening has been postponed until 2021. It was NRK who first brought up the case.

“Delayed deliveries of fire and security doors, core operating systems and COVID-19 have caused a delay in the Munch Museum’s takeover from the responsible contractor to the customer,” the municipality of Oslo writes in a press release.

To meet the art display and storage requirements, the new Munch Museum needs an advanced climate system. This is not over yet.

– We are late, but at the same time we are on our way to solving the challenges we have experienced with a stable operation related to climate systems in the building, says project director Per Egil Steen in Culture and Sports.

The Munch Museum: – We were probably a little disappointed

The museum’s director, Stein Olav Henriksen, says in the press release that he understands well if the news is disappointing for many.

– It is also for us. At the same time, it is absolutely crucial that the temperature and humidity are in accordance with the art display and storage requirements, says the director.

Gitte Skilbred, communications chief for the Munch Museum, is also disappointed.

– We were probably a bit disappointed that the opening was delayed again. We had probably believed and hoped that we could open the museum within this year, says communications manager Gitte Skilbred.

This is the second time the opening of the new Munch Museum has been postponed. The museum was originally due to open in the summer of 2020. But news came in January of this year that the opening was postponed until the fall as a result of a series of delays in security door deliveries.
