– I want to know what the opposition and the popular movement in Belarus want from us, Solberg tells NRK.
He emphasizes that it is not a matter of choosing between the West, NATO or Russia, but rather of removing a dictator.
– It is about removing a dictator, says Erna Solberg about the President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko.
I hope Norway and the world keep pushing
Opposition leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya tells NRK that she hopes Norway and the rest of the world will continue to pressure the Belarusian regime so that they can meet with the opposition and resolve the crisis in the country.
“Alexander Lukashenko now only accepts calls from Vladimir Putin,” said Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda when meeting with Prime Minister Erna Solberg today.
Nauseda has said that Lithuania is willing to mediate in the Belarus conflict.
Suggests you’ve been sitting too long.
At the same time, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko suggests that he may have been in power for too long.
– Yes, maybe I have been sitting too long, said the president during an interview with Russian media on Tuesday.
However, Lukashenko is also said to be the only person capable of further protecting Belarus.
He does not rule out speeding up the next elections, but ensures that he will remain in power.
Dramatic backdrop
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Erna Solberg visited Norwegian soldiers stationed in Lithuania.
And what is happening in Belarus is a dramatic backdrop for the visit.
When asked what signal he sends that Norway has soldiers in Lithuania, Solberg replies:
– We have been here since 2017 to practice. It is telling the Baltic countries that they are part of NATO and that we are part of the protection. This is not part of the current tense situation, says Solberg.
The Prime Minister says that the three Baltic countries and Poland want NATO solidarity to extend to them.
The military training camp that Erna Solberg visited today is located a few kilometers from the border with Belarus. Norwegian soldiers train together with forces from other NATO countries in Prabadebasen.
When Solberg visited the training area, he saw the Norwegian tanks in action.
