A French tourist has to pay a 1,000 euro fine after trying to fly out of Sardinia with local sand in his luggage, CNN reports Monday.

The idyllic white sands of the Italian island are protected and tourists are fined and even sentenced to prison for removing or removing sand from local beaches.

The man was arrested at the Cagliari Elmas airport on September 1 after being in possession of a bottle containing 4.4 kilos of sand.

White and pink sand

A spokesperson for the island’s rangers told CNN:

– The bottle was confiscated and it is inside our operating room where we have these confiscated items. At the end of the year, we usually collect a lot of sand bottles.

In 2017, a regional law came into force that prohibited bringing sand from the beaches of Sardinia. The fines vary between 500 and 3,000 euros, and the size of the fines depends on the quality of the sand and the area from which it was extracted.

The sand is white and pink in color and has become increasingly popular around the world.

Sold online

– Last year we found a website that sold our sand as a souvenir. This has now become a known problem across Europe, says the spokesman for the Sardinian rangers, adding:

– The sanctions are now much more severe and we work closely with the police.

Last year, the police confiscated almost 40 kilos of sand from a French couple, and a British citizen was fined around 850 euros for removing sand from the beaches of Sardinia.
