English shooting stars Phil Foden (20) and Mason Greenwood (18) are removed from the national team squad after breaking crown rules.
England manager Gareth Southgate says he learned Monday morning that the two great talents had broken isolation rules during the Nations League visit to Iceland.
It is Icelandic 433 who made allegations early Monday that Foden and Greenwood received a visit from a lady to their room. The Icelandic website has posted a Snapchat video in which Foden and Greenwood appear to be filmed by a visitor while sitting on the phone in their respective chairs.
– We had to decide very quickly that they could not have any contact with the rest of the team and that they could not train. Given the protocol we must follow, they must now travel back to England outside of the rest of the team, Southgate told a news conference Monday afternoon.
He does not confirm the details of the violation, but describes it as a “very serious situation”.
– They have been naive and we have handled it properly. I am aware of his young age, but of course the whole world is involved in this pandemic and it is the responsibility of people of all ages to contribute their own, says Southgate.
Says Foden and Greenwood have apologized.
The duo are now collaborating with their clubs on how they can travel back to England, while the rest of the teammates leave for Copenhagen, where a new Nations League match against Denmark will be played on Tuesday.
Manchester City’s jewel Foden played his first international match from the start when England beat Iceland 1-0 on Saturday. Greenwood, who had his breakthrough at Manchester United during Ole Gunnar Solskjær last season, came in for his debut for the A national team.
Both City and United have issued press releases condemning the players’ behavior and claiming that they are cooperating with the English Football Association on the matter.
