However, this does not prevent the Sky Sports expert from firing salvo after salvo. This time it is Manchester United’s purchase of Donny van de Beek that is under Merson’s scrutiny.

Merson: – It looks like a panic purchase.

In an interview with the Daily Star, the 52-year-old shows little understanding of why Mancehster United is bringing in the Dutch midfielder for £ 40m.

– Donny van de Beek looks like a Manchester United panic buy. I do not get it. They spend £ 40 million in a position they are already strong in, and how are you doing with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes? says Merson.

The former Arsenal player believes United have been stressed that they had yet to buy from anyone in this summer’s transfer window.

– You have to have someone who can play the role of a sitting midfielder. For me, this transfer looks like “Oh, we haven’t bought any yet. Let’s go out and buy some. Who can we locate? ”Says Merson.

– Who makes these decisions?

The Sky Sports expert believes Manchester United have more than enough quality midfielders to choose from in the stable.

– When you look at their midfield, Fred progressed and they have Scott McTominay. Now they will not be allowed to play a game. They have also given Nemanja Matic a new contract. Had they done that if they knew they were going to pick up Van de Beek? Has no sense. Who makes these decisions? says Merson.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper and now Ajax manager Edwin van der Sar, who has probably seen Van de Beek in action more often than most English pundits, has a completely different take.

The Dutchman has a lot of faith in United’s new signing and decided to buy a full page in the Manchester Evening News to wish the 23-year-old good luck at Old Trafford.
