Since the corona pandemic began, more than 1,300 health workers in Mexico have lost their lives after becoming infected. In the world, the total number exceeds 7000.

This was stated by Amnesty International on Thursday.

– That more than 7000 have lost their lives while trying to save others is a crisis on a dizzying scale. All healthcare workers have the right to be safe at work, and it is a scandal that so many have to pay the ultimate price, says Steve Cockburn of the human rights organization.

According to the AFP news agency, Amnesty believes that there is a high probability of large dark numbers.

Global cooperation is needed to ensure they have the right infection control team in place so that they can continue their important work without risking their own lives, Cockburn believes.

The most affected are Mexico, the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, Brazil and India. Only Mexico and the United States have more than 1,000 deaths among healthcare workers.

“Even many months after the pandemic, large numbers of healthcare workers are dying in countries like Mexico, Brazil and the United States, while the rapid spread in South Africa and India shows that authorities must act,” says Cockburn.

In Scandinavia, only one death has been recorded among healthcare workers. It is registered in Sweden.

On Friday morning, the death of a total of 65,816 people with the coronavirus in Mexico was confirmed:

Amnesty had a similar report in mid-July. At that time, they had recorded 3,000 deaths among healthcare workers. The organization notes that the sharp increase is also due to new data sources, while emphasizing that different countries count in different ways and have different definitions of health workers.

– During the pandemic, authorities have hailed healthcare workers as heroes, but some bells should ring when so many die due to a lack of infection control equipment, believes Cockburn.

– We ask the authorities to take immediate measures to protect the lives of health workers and, at the same time, increase the supply of infection control equipment. They need to hear healthcare workers talk about their working conditions.

Worldwide, more than 865,000 coronavirus-related deaths were recorded on Friday night, while more than 26 million cases of infection were recorded, the VG summary shows.
