(Ruusuvuori-Ruud 4-6, 3-6, 2-3) Casper Ruud (21) is ready for the third round of the US Open after beating Finn Emil Ruusuvuori (21), who had to surrender in the third set with a Damage.
The Norse settlement in New York began as a regular duel between Ruusuvuori and Ruud. At 4-4 in the first set, the Finn had up to seven chances to break the Norwegian, but the profile of Norwegian tennis saved everyone.
Then there was almost only one man in the field, and he was Norwegian. Ruud took the first set at 6-4, before moving on to 6-3 in the second. In the third set, the 21-year-old from Snarøya was leading 3-2 and was about to serve when Ruusuvuori gave up due to a hip injury.
– Casper pulls himself out of situations that are absolutely incredible. That is amazing. I also feel like he has even more to go on, says Eurosport expert Ø vivos Sørvald.
Ruud had 12 serves during the match.
Probably the next Italian resistance
Sørvald understands that Ruusuvuori gave up, after receiving treatment at the start of the match.
– It’s hard to play out there. There are extreme movements that one is exposed to in a tennis match. If there is a section, it is not fun to play, says the man who is also the sporting director of the Norwegian Tennis Association.
Now Matteo Berrettini (24) will likely be the opponent in the third round on Saturday. The Italian is ranked number eight in the world.
– It will be tough for Berrettini, because he will feel like he has to prove that he is a top 10 player. Casper is better under pressure and shows his great game when it comes, and then he will be dangerous against Berrettini, says Eurosport expert Melanie Stokke.
Personal record
Ruud just met Berrettini during the French Open last year, and then the Norwegian won. Then it was on Ruud’s favorite surface, gravel. In that case, the duo will find themselves on the US hard court.
Ruud has participated in the US Open twice before, but never made any progress from the first round. Now the 21-year-old is ready for the third.
The Grand Slam tournament is the first since the world was hit by the crown pandemic.
