War scenes on a Swedish island

– It’s about one thing: marking territories. That is what Russia is doing sailing with its ships, and now the Swedes come with a clear message: we are ready to fight.

This is how Danish military expert Peter Viggo Jakobsen analyzes the Swedish march of planes, soldiers and military equipment in and around Gotland during the last week, in the Danish daily BT.

Russia the reason

As a reason for the emergency response on the Swedish island nine miles from the mainland, the Swedish defense states increased military activity in the Baltic Sea.

Specifically: Russian military activity.

– It is Russia’s activities and exercises in Russian and international waters that are the reason for the slightly aggravated situation and also the military presence of other countries, the head of the operation, Vice Admiral Jan Thörnqvist, told SVT last week.

Swedish Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist said that Sweden is “showing strength in the Baltic Sea as a signal for Russia” and that there is “concern about the country’s intentions in the region.”

– I will have to fight

Peter Viggo Jakobsen explains what is happening now with the fact that the nations of the world since 2014 again show more and more strength with the help of military power.

He doesn’t think the danger is so great that the situation in Gotland will turn into a war.

– If it happened now that the Russians attacked, then the Swedes would have to fight back, and then we would have a regular war. But nobody really wants to go to war, so that is unlikely, he tells BT.

Yet the newspaper claims, at his expense: This reeks of war.
