Just before midnight Tuesday night, police moved in to report a fire at Nidaros Cathedral.
A woman in her 20s was arrested for the first time in the case, and now she is arrested and suspected of attempting to set fire to the medieval church, Adresseavisen reports. Police tell the newspaper that they are also accused of starting three fires in Heimdal.
She is charged with “serious bodily injury.” It was NRK who first reported the arrest.
– It indicates that the fire started, says the manager of police operations Roger Mogstad to VG.
He says the national sanctuary is well protected by fire alarms, smoke sensors and cameras, and that it was a security guard who first moved into the place.
– He quickly concluded that there was smoke inside the dome and eventually learned that there was talk of a fire in the southeastern part of the dome, at one of the many wooden entrance doors, says the operations manager.
Nightmare for the fire department if it got worse
Operations manager Mogstad says the fire brigade quickly reached the scene and there is little material damage to the church:
Parts of a door sill are damaged, plus a small area above the door.
– If it hadn’t been discovered it could have gotten worse quickly, we all saw how things were going with Notre Dame. The fire at Nidaros Cathedral is the biggest nightmare for Trøndelag’s fire and rescue service, we have talked about that many times, says the operations manager.
It says that the police link the detained person to the case on the basis of video surveillance, information to the police, investigation on the spot and search with a dog.
