It’s the closest thing to a Red Wings hockey game we’ve had since March … I mean, if it doesn’t count replays of the classic games we’ve been watching since the season ended. I mean, those old games are fun, but not knowing the result is one of the game draws in the future (even if most nights, the result feels inevitable).
Here is the quick summary:
When: Tonight, June 26 at 8 p.m. ET
Where: Secaucus, NJ (NHL Network Studio)
TV: NBCSN, NHLN, TVA, SN
Format:
Fifteen teams will be eligible in Phase 1 of the 2020 NHL Draft Lottery (to be held on June 26) – the seven teams that have no longer qualified for the Stanley Cup 2020 Playoffs, ranked in reverse order of their point percentages at the break in the regular season and eight “placeholders” representing the qualifying round teams that will not advance, maintaining previously established odds for the lottery draw.
In previous years, the presentation on the lottery program would have Bill Daly revealing 15-to-1 picks, where we’d know which team won a top-three pick for that missing team in its expected spot. However, with teams 8-15 as placeholders for teams preparing to play ersatz playoff games, the format will be slightly different:
If none of the 8 unknown alpha teams (those who lose the 2020 qualifier) win an overall pick of the top three, Bill Daly’s countdown / card change will start at n. ° 7.
If one of the 8 unknown teams gets a pick among the top three, the countdown / flip starts at 8.

If 2 out of 8 unknown teams win a selection from the top three in the draw, the countdown / flip begins at n. ° 9.
If 3 out of 8 unknown teams win the top three choices, well, there won’t be much countdown. The new first three will be unknown until a second draw after the play-in tie.

There is a real chance that when this is said and done, Bill Daly will have to sit in front of the international broadcast cameras and tell everyone that Buffalo is choosing 10th overall and then pretend that the rest of the information we will get tonight is really interesting. (since this would mean that the best three choices were won by the placeholders, so we won’t know who has them until Phase 2 is decided after the play-in round).
If we see Daly start with Buffalo at # 7, all it really means is that there is still a better than 50% chance that one of the other five lottery teams has won the top pick over Detroit.
It is a live bingo thread. Let’s have fun!
