DETROIT – The Lions will win one of the first seven picks in the NFL Draft if they lose next Sunday. And as anyone who watched last Saturday could attest, it seems like a pretty good prospect.
The Tampas were knocked out by the Lions by 40 points against two Buccaneers, a painful bruise, a complete hemorrhage that knocked them out of four other places in the NFL Draft. They are now slotted in the seventh overall pick, and can still climb to the high altitude of No.3.
The Jacksonville Jaguars have made the first overall pick and are the target of precious quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Despite winning back-to-back in the last two weeks, the New York Jets have picked up the second overall, matching the longest winning streak of the Matt Patricia era in Detroit. (Yes indeed.)
But the Lions can still catch any of the next four teams. The Atlanta Falcons, the Houston Texans (whose picks are owned by the Miami Dolphins), the Cincinnati Bengals and the Philadelphia Eagles sit on these four wins. They all have a good opposing winning percentage, which means Detroit has a tiebreaker on all of them. A pair of defeats with a win in Atlanta, Houston, Cincinnati or Philly if the Lions go second.
A win for all four teams seems particularly unlikely, but it will be Detroit’s way to a third overall pick.
The last person to go seventh overall was a big lion target, ub burn defensive tackle Derrick Brown. The first two people before that were Josh Allen, who is definitely not confused or anything. But Allen chooses that now that he will work nicely for the Bills, he has now grown into the best youth quarterbacks in the game and has taken the BLS to the AFC East Championship.
The last time Detroit won a division championship was: 1993, the league’s longest drought ever.
Detroit could find its own quarterback of the future in the draft. The Len Lun picks have been a good one, but instead the success at the quarterbacks has been a hit and miss since: Byron Leftwich (2003), Andre Weir (1990), Wayne Peace (1984), Todd Blacklage (1983), Phil Sims (1979). And Bill Munson (1964).
