New York reports 918 new cases of coronavirus: State reports largest daily increase in infections since mid-June

New York had 918 new confirmed coronavirus cases on Thursday, the governor announced, in what he said was “a reminder that the virus is still here.”
The grim new figure was the first time new infections have exceeded 900 since June 12.
The governor’s Andrew Cuomo said in announcing the number on Friday that the latest data should be a warning to everyone.

“The more than 900 new cases in New York yesterday, although they represent only 1.38% of the evidence, are a reminder that the virus is still here,” he said.
He also urged all New Yorkers to continue taking precautions against the virus, such as frequent hand washing, avoiding crowds, and wearing a face mask.

“I cannot repeat enough that our actions today, those of people who are smart and follow all precautions, and local governments that enforce state guidelines, will determine which direction these numbers are going,” he added.
The percentage of New York State residents who test positive for COVID-19 each day hovers around 1% to 2% over the past week, despite concerns that last month’s protests of George Floyd’s death could have fueled a further increase.
More than 24,800 people with COVID-19 have died in New York since the first deaths were reported in March.

New York has lost more than 24,000 people to COVID-19 since the outbreak began in March.
The state was by far the most affected in the United States.
The New York count came when 40 states across the country reported an increase in the number of infections.
Florida, California, Arizona and Texas are now battling a surge in the virus, and two counties in Texas have said their hospitals are at full capacity.
Patients in the Rio Grande Valley, in Starr and Hidalgo counties, have been warned to stay home while the outbreak overwhelms local hospitals.
Judge Eloy Vera said there have been 18 deaths in Starr County due to Covid-19 and that two seriously ill patients had to be transferred out of the area for treatment.
One of the patients was taken to San Antonio and the other to Dallas, the judge said.
“The local and valley hospitals are at full capacity and no more beds are available,” he said.

“I urge all of our residents to shelter in place, cover their faces, practice social distancing, and AVOID MEETINGS.”

“New Yorkers turned the curve on this deadly virus by being smart and taking the proper precautions during this pandemic, and that is reflected in the low hospitalizations and the rate of positive results yesterday,” he said.
