Alabama passed the 2,000 mark for new coronavirus cases overnight.
The Alabama Department of Public Health’s 10 am figures on July 18 showed that Alabama has had 64,180 cases of coronavirus, an increase of 2,069 overnight. Deaths increased by 21 to 1,253.
The positive test rate also grew to its highest number. For the week ending July 11, the most recent data available, 16.6% of coronavirus tests in the state were positive. That figure was less than 10% for May before rising to 10-11% in June and skyrocketing in July.
The state has tested 573,441 people for coronaviruses, 160,510 in the past 14 days. Of those recent tests, 21,100 were positive. ADPH said 29,736 people are supposed to have recovered from the coronavirus. As of yesterday, there were 1,416 people hospitalized in Alabama due to the coronavirus, another record.
