After a three-minute lead, Zenit St. Petersburg (10-5) with Artūras Gudaitis endured the suffering at the end of the Euroleague match.
Man of the match
Xavi Pascual’s students in the first leg 78:72 (18:22, 19:13, 25:17, 16:20) broke the Maccabi of Tel Aviv (7-10) and ended the calendar year winning 10 rounds in 15 rounds.
Midway through the fourth quarter, when KC Rivers struck from a distance, the guests firmly held the lead in their hands – 73:62, but then the attack fell into the hole.
The St. Petersburg club missed all six shots of the match for the rest of the time, made four mistakes and scored the remaining points with penalty kicks.
Before the last minute, Chris Jones scored two points on a foul and Maccabi’s gap narrowed to 72:75.
In another attack, Scottie Wilbekin lost, Mateusz Ponitka stopped for a foul and realized a penalty of two, but then Wilbekin returned to incorrectly attack the basket from distance.
Without the Zenit players clearing the field in eight seconds, Maccabi’s attack ended in an inadequate long-range shot from Wilbekin and the St. Petersburg team triumphed in Tel Aviv.
Gudaitis, who started the game in the starting five, scored 9 points (4/5 double. 1/4 penalty) in 14 minutes, bounced 2 balls, made a successful pass, caused 3 fouls and scored 10 utility points.
Another Zenit center, Alex Poythress, dominated the field and played a lifetime game in the Euroleague in 19 minutes, scoring 16 points (7/9 double, 2/3 penalty), grabbing 5 balls and capturing a profit of 18 points.
Maccabi: Scottie Wilbekin 18, Tyler Dorsey 13, Elijah Bryant and Ante Žižičius 10 each.
Zenit: Alex Poythress 16, Mateusz Ponitka 14 (7 rebounds, 5 res., 4 vol.), Kevin Pangos 11 (2/6 trit., 6 res., 4 vol.).
