After the coronavirus became involved in the Zenit club in St. Petersburg, the team has a total of 6 healthy basketball players in its ranks, and director Aleksandras Čerkovnis commented on the difficult situation.

“We want to play, but with 6 players it is impossible. Of course we could gather 8 players by inviting the youngsters, but I don’t think we have the right to do that. First of all, we have a newly infected team member every day and there is no guarantee that they (young players) will not get sick.

This means that even if a young player is invited, we can lose him immediately. Secondly, if a new case of coronavirus is detected in Spain, we will have to leave the player or another member of the squad there for two weeks, ”said the Zenit coach.

In total, the COVID-19 infection, including Lithuanian Artūras Gudaitis, affects up to 13 people: eight players, four coaches and a masseur. The entire team has been quarantined and medically supervised, and the training process has been suspended.

Coronavirus cases in Euroleague teams will not be considered a reason why a duel should not occur. In the event that one or more COVID-19 cases are detected among team players, coaches or staff members, these individuals will need to isolate themselves, but the rest of the team will need to participate in the match according to the Euroleague schedule.

The club must register at least 8 players for the meeting to take place. If that number can’t be collected, then a 0:20 technical loss would be recorded for the team. This is the fate that threatens the St. Petersburg team.

Cherkovsky also added that he had asked the Euroleague for a possible postponement of the match. This week, Zenit will play with the teams of Vitoria Baskonia (Tuesday) and Valencia (Thursday).

“We inform the Euroleague about our situation as soon as we find out about the test results. We are waiting for a solution and the rules apply to everyone,” added Cherkovnis.

The situation outraged the Zenit defender and former KC Rivers of Žalgiris.

“It just came to our notice then. We are punished for this because the players contracted the virus.” We may have to train young players so they can play if necessary, “Rivers wrote on Twitter.
