The ban revokes broadcast licenses, television frequencies and freezes bills for an initial period of five years, the presidency announced Wednesday.

In Kiev, channels ZIK, NewsOne and 112 were immediately closed.

Zelensky said that these channels pose a threat to the spread of Russian propaganda and are dangerous for the security of the country. The president imposed sanctions on a total of eight companies, including the aforementioned television channels.

In a joint statement, the channels called the ban “bundling accounts with uncomfortable media.”

In Ukraine, these channels were seen as a means of broadcasting the pro-Russian party “Opposition Platform for Life”.

“These media have become one of the tools of the war against Ukraine, so they are blocked to protect national security,” Zelensky spokeswoman Julia Mendel wrote on Facebook.

Zelensky told Twitter on Wednesday that his country supports freedom of expression, “not propaganda financed by aggressors.”
