Workers return to the bridge below the Neris

The workers of the company “Kauno tiltai” continue the construction of the new bridge over the Neris. This bridge will reduce congestion on the A1 highway, which has become the transportation artery for the entire country, in the future.

At the end of January, a tragic disaster occurred during the construction of the new bridge over the Neris, during which a worker died. As a result, all construction work was suspended.

“Kauno tiltai’s project on the A1 road near Kleboniškis includes the construction of a new bridge over the Neris, a viaduct over Jonava Street and a connecting road. Following the technological breakdown, the company started the construction season in mid- March. Taking care of the water drainage systems, we are continuing the construction of the viaduct over Jonavos Street, “commented Aldas Rusevičius, CEO of Kauno tiltų, about the works being carried out at the bridge construction site.

An assessment of the bridge structure was carried out after the January disaster. The researchers who found it found that the main structures, the floor and the supports, are intact and that the construction of the bridge itself can continue without remodeling the permanent structures.

According to the head of Kauno Tiltai, although the structures of the main bridge were not damaged during the accident, the damaged temporary structures had to be repaired.

“A new additionally reinforced temporary metal auxiliary structure has been custom fabricated for the company. It will be used in the technological process of bridge construction. We hope to resume bridge construction after Easter,” noted A. Rusevičius when working on construction. it will start at full speed.

Although works are resuming, all the circumstances of the disaster are not yet clear.

“The investigation into the circumstances and causes of the disaster is ongoing. The investigation is being carried out by a team of experts from the company and two independent expert companies. The company’s findings will be transmitted to the investigating authorities. They will provide their formal report. “Kaunas Bridges” is taking and will take all measures to avoid similar events in the future, “said the company’s CEO.

The disaster investigation is also carried out by the State Labor Inspectorate, the State Land Planning and Construction Inspectorate and the Kaunas Regional Prosecutor’s Office.

“Kauno diena” remembers that when a new bridge was built over the Neris on January 27th. one man died and three more workers were injured.

“Two of them were released immediately after the medical examination, currently they continue to work on the site. The third worker is being treated in rehabilitation,” Rusevicius commented on the condition of the workers, adding that all costs related to the disaster and their las consequences were borne by the company.

The new bridge over the Neris is scheduled for completion this fall. “Our specialists do their best to fulfill their obligations in a timely and high-quality manner,” said Kauno Tiltai CEO.
