Soon, the residents of Kaunas will witness even greater changes: around the stadium, which meets international standards, the entire sprawling space of Žaliakalnis will change.

Main among the big projects

“I have no doubt that Kaunas, along with all of Lithuania, is looking forward to the day when we will meet to watch the first football matches at the S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadiums. She is coming. After a long break , the works are gaining momentum again: Kaunas will have a stadium of international standards. And this is just one of the projects that are being carried out on an increasing scale in our city. All this would have been difficult without the support of the Government and the personal support of Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis. This is a guarantee that important projects in the city will continue successfully, “said the Mayor of Kaunas, Visvaldas Matijošaitis.

He added that innovations are also waiting for the surrounding Žaliakalnis spaces near the stadium: the entire Sports Street Square will be fundamentally changed, an athletics stadium will be designed here, one of the symbols of the city, Ąžuolynas, is currently being managed, and the reconstruction of the legendary sports hall is nearing completion. Finally, the Valley of Songs will take its turn.

Reviewing the main projects that are being carried out in the city, V. Matijošaitis drew attention to the completion of the new ice rink near the Girstutis Sports Center. Work is also beginning on Nemunas Island, where the construction of a water sports center near the Žalgiris Arena and the country’s only science museum will begin soon.

An important part of the work was carried out in the construction of a new bridge to the island, as well as in the implementation of infrastructure in the territory of the Aleksotas Innovation Industrial Park. Residents of Šilainiai see through the windows a bright construction site on Kuršių Street, where the foundation for a new kindergarten will be laid in the coming days.

The total value of investments in major projects for Kaunas and the whole of Lithuania is currently about 121 million. euros.

Red card for “legionaries”

At the end of last year, the construction of the S. Darius and S. Girėnas stadiums experienced an inevitable hiatus. The Kaunas Municipality terminated the contract with the Turkish company Kayi Construction, which did not adhere to the planned work schedule and could not guarantee the smooth continuity of construction.

Regarding football, we hoped that the “legionaries” of Turkey would meet the expectations of our team, that is, of all Kaunas, and help to achieve an important result. Unfortunately, that did not happen. We had to lift a yellow card and finally a red card before reaching “disqualification”. We have drawn conclusions and today we are calm knowing that one of the most important objects in Kaunas is being built by a Kaunas company: Autokausta. This in itself is an additional responsibility for the contractors, so that all work is done flawlessly and on time, ”said V. Matijošaitis about unexpected sporting obstacles.

Much of the work has already been done: worn elements, reinforced concrete supports, lighting poles, billboards have been dismantled. VIP stands have already been erected, a car park has been built. It is in these objects where the construction machinery and the workers align themselves, who will have to expand what was started.

A thorough evaluation of the work done so far is completed, responsible project managers are appointed, and costs are recalculated. The new contractors plan to make more detailed preparations in September so that changes are immediately visible to the naked eye at full capacity.

“Currently, final design work is also underway: the latest subtleties are combined, points are made on architectural solutions, and the smallest nuances of the building are discussed with subcontractors. Soil laboratory tests were conducted last week to identify the situation. Your results will be important for the future course of work. October will see big changes from afar, ”said Juozas Kriaučiūnas, Director of Autokausta.

Attention to every detail

The representatives of the municipality look at the processes with great precision. Detailed reports with precisely calculated costs are required for every job, even the smallest. The goal is to use government funding and city funds in the most transparent and rational way possible.

According to Vilius Šiliauskas, director of the Kaunas municipal administration, a similar practice also applies to other constructions: “Each program provides detailed volumes of work, both in terms of time and money. We are in constant contact with the contractor and we work together to solve any problems that arise so that the construction works do not stop and develop in the best possible way. We are in no rush to make the simplest decisions, every detail is important here, because these objects will serve Kaunas for many years.

The Darius and S. Girėnas stadium is planned to demolish old structures. Construction scrap will be transported out of the city center and shredded for recycling. All of this is done to avoid additional noise and air pollution in densely populated urban areas.

After cleaning the area, the foundation will be laid and new structures will be built. It is planned to expand the engineering networks and cover the roof this year, protecting from unnecessary rainfall during the cold season.

Seek professional help

“It is gratifying that current contractors view the project responsibly, choosing professionals from each field to help themselves: the heated surface of the plaza is served by some and the modern treadmills are served by others. When building an item of this level, everyone should do what they do best. First of all, all the details are designed and coordinated with the organizations of FIFA, UEFA and IAAF, only then the real work begins, ”explained Vigimantas Abramavičius, Head of the Department of Construction Management of the municipality of Kaunas.

In recent years, from the moment the first version of the project was developed, not only the architectural part has changed, but also the cost of the construction site. This has been influenced by the new demands of international sports federations for higher standards.

Stadium lighting regulations, competition filming and commentary rooms, screen resolution requirements and other details have changed. More than 15 thousand. In addition to high-level sports competitions, various entertainment events will be held at the stadium, which will have a place on the grandstand. This required a greater power supply capacity, the decision to place stronger coatings.

After reconstruction, the stadium will be converted into a modern sports and leisure space of the highest level, which will undoubtedly serve the national level.
