It is not advisable to wait until November 10
Rimvydas Pocius, Ergo Insurance Company’s corporate clients transportation insurance portfolio manager, says season-appropriate tires are critical. According to the insurance expert, the condition and properties of the tires depend on the stability of the car, the length of the braking distance, and at the same time the ability to avoid serious traffic accidents.
“The tires must ensure good grip on the road surface and help maintain the stability of the car even on slippery roads. Although we still do not want to think about jars and other jokes of nature, as every year, we will not avoid them. Therefore, it is important to prepare in time for climatic changes, which can occur very suddenly, ”says R. Pocius.
According to him, in preparation for the tire change, you should not wait until November 10, after which, according to the Road Traffic Regulations (KET), cars with summer tires can no longer be used. Pocius urges drivers to assess actual weather conditions and start thinking about changing tires when the column on the thermometer drops below 7 degrees. It is considered that when the air temperature reaches this limit, it is safer to drive on winter tires than on summer tires.
“Some drivers wait until the last minute each year and change their tires only when the deadline is approaching, albeit before November 10. usually already plucked or snowed. Changing tires should not be seen as the simplest formality that KET offers, which is one of the most important measures to ensure greater safety on the road, ”says R. Pocius.
It is important to pay attention to the requirements.
The representative of the insurers also points out that it is not necessary to provide the car with new winter tires every year, but it is very important that they are in good condition and with the required tread depth. According to KET requirements, its depth must be at least 3 mm.
“By saving money, it makes sense for drivers to use not only the same tires that have been installed for many years and are heavily worn, but also, for example, their kits made from different tires. It should be noted that mounting different tires on the Same axle is not safe and is prohibited by KET. Tires must have the same pattern on both sides of the axle and the tread depth must not differ by more than 5mm. Generally, one set of tires is safe to use for 3-5 seasons, but it depends a lot on the quality of the tires, their storage conditions and, of course, how much and where they drive, ”says R. Pocius.
May cost an insurance benefit
According to the expert, the main reason for a timely tire change should be the desire to feel safe on the road, but it can also avoid additional costs. KET imposes a fine of € 30-40 for driving a car with non-conforming tires. Also, in the case of such misconduct, the car will need to be re-inspected as it will be automatically revoked.
“Finally, driving a car with the wrong tires is also a violation of the insurance conditions. As a result, a helmet may not be present if an accident occurs with such a car. Under mandatory insurance, the driver injured in the accident is, by Of course, compensated, but the insurance company can recover the damage from the culprit who drove on the wrong tires, ”says R. Pocius.
According to the traffic police, a total of 870 offenses were recorded in the country last year when people drove vehicles with tires in poor condition.
