The first day of the Aukštaitija Rally has gotten intriguing from the start of the test speed section. Vaidotas Žala and Andrius Malnieks were involved in the accident, which crashed their Škoda Fabia R5. Although at the time it seemed that the fate of the crew and the chance to become Lithuanian champions could hang in their hair, the team’s mechanics quickly restored the car and the duo were able to get the fight started.
On the first day of the rally, V.Žala and A.Malnieks dominated in four of the five speed sections and then gained 21.3 seconds. advantage over the closest pursuers Dominykas Butvilas and Renatas Vaitkevičius. Vladas Jurkevičius and Aisvydas Paliukėnas took third place.
But on the second day, everything was turned upside down in the literal sense of the word. Vaidotas Žala and Andris Malnieks turned on the seventh gear stage. After this failure, they were forced to lay down their arms both in the fight for the names of the rally winners and for the title of Lithuanian rally champions.
Then the initiative was taken over by Martynas Samsonas with Ervinas Snitkas. Soon, however, the plot changed dramatically again. After breaking the steering column of the Ford Fiesta N5 + in the ninth speed section, Martynas Samsonas did not control the car, he also turned and left the race.
After this incident, new strategies began. Following the departure of V.Žala and M.Samson, the Ukrainian duo Valerijus Gorban and Sergei Larens were able to breathe a sigh of relief.
All they had to do was reach the finish line, score points and secure the Lithuanian car rally champion titles. The guests did just that: they chose a conservative tactic and finished the rally in third place. That was enough to implement the plan to succeed in this year’s championship.
However, the intrigue remained in the rally until the very end, as the crews of Dominykas Butvilas and Renatas Vaitkevičius and Vladas Jurkevičius and Aisvydas Paliukėnas competed for the names of the rally winners. They were allotted only 0.1 seconds after a speed section.
The winners were announced after the last ten kilometers. The tandem of D. Butvilas and R. Vaitkevičius was faster in them. They celebrated victory in the final line-up, after fourteen speed sections and 130 kilometers of combat, in just 1.94 seconds. advantage. Vladas Jurkevičius and Aisvydas Paliukėnas had to recognize the advantage of the rivals and enjoy the trophies of second place.
Justas Tamašauskas and Vaida Šmigelskas celebrated the victory in the single-axle car classification. In the absolute classification, they finished the rally in eighth position. Justas and Titas Simaškos were second in this classification. Renaldas Šeinauskas and Darius Leskauskas took third place.
The Rally Aukštaitija competition was not only the last stage of the Lithuanian and Latvian Rally Championship, but also the stage of the Lithuanian Sprint Rally Championship. The fastest were the Latvians M.Švarc-Švampans with co-driver A.Lūkins. P. Baltrukėnas and G.Tarasov landed for them a little over two and a half minutes. T.Šmagarys and V.Čiuplys secured third place.
A total of 96 tandems started in the Aukštaitija Rally competition. Six more duos performed the zero crew functions. Due to accidents, breakdowns or other problems, 32 crews did not finish the race.
