The project of the team of architects, urban planners and landscapers MB – Bauland (D.Baltrušaitis, A. Dailidaitė, P. Kliučininkas, J. Šerpetauskytė) – Mammoth Park – won the competition for the adaptation of the slopes of Šeškinė initiated by the City Council of Vilnius. and the Trade Union of Architects of Lithuania.
The Šeškinė Geomorphological Reserve, located in the central part of Vilnius, between the Žvėrynas, Šeškinė and Šnipiškės districts, was established to preserve the slope of the slope of the Neris Valley. The territory of the reserve is one of several especially important elements of the Vilnius natural framework, dividing the urban structure of the city, forming close connections with the natural territories of the suburbs, and at the same time being closer to the city center. With the growing demand for quality green spaces
In Vilnius, the Vilnius City Municipality announced an architecture competition to create a vision of the territory.
The vision of the winning team of architects, urban planners and landscape architects is to create healthy, sustainable, smart and climate resistant cities. And the solutions designed are based on the search for a balance between urban and green public spaces. The team is convinced that the secret of successful projects lies in cooperation with specialists in different fields. This practice was also used in the proposed competition work. Strong arguments of a geological and geomorphological nature that emphasize the development and essential values of the planned territory were formed by the geographer VU doc. Dr. Richard Skorupsky and geologist dr. Analysis and suggestions by Simon Saarmann. Landscape and natural architecture solutions were discussed with botanist Vilma Gudynienė. Mobility and transport intensity issues are addressed with Dr. Kristina Gauče.
Mammoth Park architectural-urban idea
The concept of Mammoth Park is to adapt the reserve to visit and create a park of national importance with a cognitive educational function. Although Vilnius is the only European capital located on the brink of the last ice age, the city has yet to fully emphasize its geological uniqueness in any park or museum. The presentation of this theme provides an opportunity to create a center of national importance and attraction in Lithuania – Mammoth Park.
The park would feature mammoth finds, the extent of the ice age spread, and expressive glacial landforms. The vegetation and the slopes of Šeškinė are a suitable place to constantly reveal the peculiarities of the relief of the entire Vilnius territory and the formation of the landscape in general during the ice age. Also to make known to the public how this landscape caused the emergence of the city, the formation of the capital led to its growth. The unique context of the area, dictated by nature, inspired the project concept and proposed functional program.
Winning Contest Solutions
The park would consist of a “Mammoth” educational trail accessible to all, alternative “Mammoth” trails, three picturesque landscapes that rise to the existing treetops and repeat the curves of the Neris River in its shape, playgrounds and recreation areas called mammoth grasses, a botanical garden and different parts of the park connecting suspension bridge. Along with the old ammunition depots, at the foot of the slope, the functional program is complemented by the Cognitive Trail “Amunition”. The surrounding existing transit hiking and biking trails are integrated into the park’s overall trail network.
The current territory of the reserve is surrounded by extremely heavy-use city streets. To make the park visible and easy to find, a system of public transport stops, Statyk ir eik parking lots and planned pedestrian overpasses have been proposed. Currently, the nature reserves and surrounding slopes of Šeškinė oz and Karoliniškės do not connect with each other, the entrances are fragmented, and the migration of animals takes place intensively through the surrounding streets. Therefore, the project also offers a viaduct of ecological products for the migration of animals, whose location is planned on Ozo street. The project also includes
