In most cases, those speculations turned out to be true. Of course, climate change is now drastic and unpredictable, so perhaps the ancient wisdom crystals are gradually losing their value. But it is interesting to verify it ”, Libertas Klimka, Lithuanian physicist, doctor of natural sciences, ethnologist, historian of science, professor at the Lithuanian University of Education Sciences, pioneer of new interdisciplinary disciplines – paleoastronomy and ethnocosmology – in Lithuania, started our conversation about the winter forecast, which is already on the threshold.
Prophets – St. Martin and St. Andrew
According to the professor, we are now living in such an interesting period, the so-called pre-winter, from November 11, that is, St. Martin, until November 30, St. Andrew’s Day.
“Phenologists call this period winter, the last day of autumn and the first day of winter. Both were important weather forecasters, – said prof. L. Klimka. – St. Martin’s Day marks the beginning of the winter.

It was said that if the chicken is put on the ice during Martynas (the balls are frozen), it will be in the water during Christmas. Or in short: Martynas – with brad, Christmas – with ice. This clever saying probably came true.
For several years in a row I tried to realize this and to my surprise it still holds. It must be assumed that this experience has not yet been confirmed. “
After a moment of pause, the interviewee continued to share his experience and wisdom:
“Since Martin’s day, the last autumn holidays, the festive dish is a roast goose, that goose’s sternum guessed the course of the whole winter as it will be. If that sternum is almost all white, it means that winter will be snowy and deep.
And if it is planted with brown or brown spots rather than white, it means there will be a lot of thawing during the winter or it will be very easy in general.
Well, and the villagers, of course, slaughtered the pig before the holidays. It was also from his cash register that he was trying to guess what winter would be like.
It was said that if it was that bumpy it was uneven, it meant it would be replaced by thaws. And if one end is smooth or one end thicker and the other thinner, then the beginning or end of winter will be richer. “
Is it white Christmas?
S t. Andrew’s Day, according to the teacher, is a day when a bear falls asleep during the winter.
“It just came to our knowledge then. That day was very important, and even the smallest nuances were important, whether the sun was shining or there was a lot of snow, it all determined the next year’s harvest. And it was said that a sign is better for legumes, another, for summer, and if that day is so mildly cold, then rye will be perfect.
This is how they deduced: the wisdom of the ancients was shared by prof. L. Klimka. “Another interesting sign, which is still largely confirmed, is that if the snow falls during the winter (from Martin to Andrew) and it stays thawed all day, after a month there is real white winter everywhere.”
It is true that the ethnologist noticed that St. Martin’s Day was quite warm this year.
“It also says that we can expect to see Christmas in white. While otherwise, other signs, such as a windy day, suggest that winter can be changeable. However, we will be able to find out more in December, during St. “The teacher clarified.” During and after twelve days, we can deduce what each month of the year will be like. The weather on that day will also do the same for the month of next year.
Winter
For example, on December 13. We are seeing how it will be January 14 – February 15 – March, etc. Suppose that if the thirteenth day is beautiful, neither snow nor cold is great, then January will be mild, and if it rains, it means darganot. Unbelievable, but my method of guessing time is still true. Of course, there may be deviations from them, but as far as I can tell, I sign every year, in most cases the observations are still valid. “
Speigai is already a rare guest
“It just came to our knowledge then. And your observations predict that?” I asked the interlocutor.
“It just came to our attention then. And the sparks are shown, for example, by the north wind blowing during Mykolines (Feast of St. Michael on September 29), the windy day. Then the winter will be hot,” he explained Prof. L. Klimka.
However, if there will be a rush next winter, the ethnologist was reluctant to predict.
“I am afraid to predict this year because I was in the city and it is difficult to determine the direction of the wind in the city, but there was not much wind. In the city, the labyrinths of the streets, the buildings change the direction of the wind a lot. You need to be in the field to notice the real signs. Climate monitoring is determined by many nuances, ”said the professor.
Another way to observe winter is by flying birds. This year, according to the ethnologist, the birds did not show that they were already protected by the cold wave.
But this year the ghosts flew very early …
“Yes, the sparrows flew very early, but other birds, such as geese, flew not long ago. Although, for example, on November 17, when I was in the village, I noticed a large swarm of fangs flying towards the house. This indicated that it would cool down in the next few days.
And went. But certainly not at all, because it is still winter. However, as soon as the squirrels approach the house, flocks appear in the farmhouse, which indicates that it will already be colder ”, the interlocutor shared his practice of observation and knowledge.
Birds are prophets of cold weather
“Wow, still!”, I was surprised.
“It just came to our attention then. The tit is very sensitive. They find shelter or some food. And when it’s hot, they are not on the farm. As soon as they feel the heat again, they fly into the forest. they stick to the person when it is most difficult for them.
Therefore, according to their behavior, it is possible to predict the weather in the coming days, – said prof. L. Klimka. – The frosts that approach in winter are also predicted by crows: if they land in the treetops, they usually turn to the north, it is already clear that before the cold. And if the crows walk on the ground, it will melt. “
The professor reaffirmed that these short-term observations of birds are very valid, since they are atmospheric phenomena and the reaction of animals.
“Animals are much more sensitive than humans. They predict because their survival depends on it. Man can adapt, hide in the house and the animal will perish if it does not react. And those who develop that ability to predict the future survive,” emphasized the ethnologist.
