At the same time, however, the organization warned that the masks may even increase the risk of infection if people touch them with dirty hands and contaminate them. WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said: “Masks can also cause the wrong feeling of security.”
Until now, the WHO position has been that wearing masks makes sense for patients and caregivers. Massive use of masks is not recommended.
The WHO chief said the masks will not replace hand hygiene, distance and monitoring of patients and their social contacts. Masks alone will not protect against Covid-19, he emphasized. Governments are said to encourage the use of masks where the virus is highly prevalent and where it is difficult to stay away from others, such as on public transport, in shops, or in crowded small spaces. The WHO has also stated that sewing masks are an opportunity for people to do something to fight the virus, and it is also a potential source of income.
