“The Minister of Education today gave instructions on how to ensure the safety of students, teachers and employees of the institutions when organizing the educational process and being in buildings, structures and the territory of educational institutions,” announced this Saturday the service of press of the Ministry of Education.
According to the instructions of I. Karpenka, additional measures will be taken to strengthen control over the access of people outside the educational institutions, as well as other measures will be taken to strengthen the security regime in them, the ministry said.
Cooperation will also be organized between all relevant services, including law enforcement and security agencies, “to implement practical measures to ensure safe conditions for citizens to receive education.”
“A corresponding letter was sent to all educational institutions,” the ministry said.
The day before, several students from the Minsk State University of Linguistics were detained after a group of students chanted “Marseille” in English.
According to numerous videos of the event distributed on social networks, the students were detained both by people in civilian clothes and by uniformed officers with the inscription “OMON” on their backs. They also show that the university administration did not interfere in the harsh arrests.
“Unprecedented event”
Natalia Baranava, rector of the Minsk State University of Linguistics, said Friday’s events were unexpected and unprecedented, and said she was not aware of the arrival of the officials.
“An unprecedented event has occurred at our university. What happened was very unexpected for us, because we did not know about the arrival of the Interior officials and their actions.
The Ministry of the Interior explains the reason for this incident by the fact that illegal activities were carried out at the university, ”he said in his video address posted on social networks.
Baranava confirmed that five university students had been detained. Hours later they were released and protocols were drawn up for “violations of the organization or organization of mass acts.”
“What happened? The students planned to sing songs in the university lobby. Deans of faculties were sent to dialogue with them. During the performance of the songs, the event became politicized, slogans rang out and non-state symbols appeared. And then it happened. what happened ”, said the rector.
According to her, all possible measures were taken to find out the whereabouts of the detained students and to return them to the university.
The rector appealed to university professors and students not to organize and carry out unauthorized events at the institution.
“For its part, the Rectorate is taking the necessary measures to identify the reasons for this and strengthen it [asmenų] admission to university and preventing it in the future, ”said Baranava.
Belarus has been the subject of protests for almost a month since the August 9 presidential elections, which were won by authoritarian leader Aliaksandr Lukashenko, who has ruled the country since 1994. The opposition and Western countries consider these elections to be rigged.
