The construction of the new pedestrian bridge over the Nemunas continues. Most of the work has already been done, so passersby can see their shapes.
First evaluations
A year ago the construction of a new pedestrian bridge that goes from the Center to Nemunas Island began. The contours and curves of the bridge can now be seen.
“I think it will be very nice, because now we can see the curves of the bridge. The construction itself seems to be already in place. I guess the surface of the bridge will be now,” said Vilius, who met at the bridge construction site. .
Other passersby noted that the footbridge was more necessary on the Aleksotas side, as there were no opportunities to cross the river on foot and access the island from here. There are already four bridges leading to the island in the center, two of which can be used by cars. But the townspeople were still happy that a change was taking place.
The works are scheduled to finish in August or September of this year.
A lot of work has been done
Kauno diena asked what work had already been done and what remained to be done before the opening of the new connection between Nemunas Island and the Center. Specialists from the Kaunas City Municipality indicated that the bridge will be built throughout the summer.
“Currently, the supports of the new bridge have already been installed, the concrete floor has been installed. It remains to install the waterproofing of the bridge, place the upper layer, install handrails, lighting and order the environment around the bridge,” he added. Vigimantas Abramavičius, Head of the Kaunas Municipality Construction Management Department, commented.
He indicated that the works are scheduled to be completed in August or September of this year.

The city authorities also planned to link Nemunas Island with Aleksotas. The pedestrian bridge should be like a continuation of the new bridge currently under construction, but it is not yet clear when this construction will begin on the Aleksotas side.
“The technical design of the second bridge has already been prepared, but no funds are foreseen for the construction of this bridge this year. So it is not clear when it could start. We believe that the construction of the new bridge V. Abramavičius spoke the plans of the island and Aleksotas.

Architectural solutions
What the two new pedestrian bridges leading to Nemunas Island will look like was decided in 2018 in the summer. It was then announced that the best vision for the bridges was provided by the KILD team of architects.
The 57 m and 320 m long bridges were designed by architects Ivan Ksnelashvili, Petras Išora and Dominykas Daunys on behalf of KILD. This team had won laurels in the construction project of the eco-bridge in Seoul, capital of South Korea.
During the presentation of the project, the architects stated that the architectural and constructive solutions of the two bridges that connect Nemunas Island were chosen in such a way as to have the least possible impact on the panorama and landscape of the city. According to the architects, the arch bridge allows to extract the minimum dimensions in the river spaces and to create panoramic public spaces of several levels. One of the highlights of the new Kaunas bridge project is a 360-degree panoramic view.
“The townspeople will be able to admire the panoramic view of the middle of the bridge and the amphitheaters formed at the entrances on both sides. The stepped terraces provide the opportunity to sit on the smooth embankment and the low terraces of the parks,” said the authors of the draft. .
