This is the first child in a Lithuanian family to have a daughter in unusual circumstances. The girl’s parents had already chosen the name, although she did not want to reveal it to the public. According to Vaidas Klumbis, DFDS Head of Public Relations and Communication for the Baltic States, the girl’s official date of birth is Saturday morning, 4.16. The birth was taken in the middle of the sea, en route to the port of Kiel.

The family is waiting for their daughter and mother to leave the hospital and be able to organize the necessary paperwork. When asked if perhaps his daughter would have a passport not only from Lithuania, but also from another country near the coast, her father joked that the situation is truly unique. Since the daughter was born at sea, it is unclear what should be entered on the birth certificate.
According to V. Klumbis, crew members sailing on DFDS ferries have completed first aid courses. If there are more serious problems, seek medical advice and a helicopter. In this case, the family received all necessary assistance on the ferry, but a helicopter was immediately called.
Interestingly, the case of the birth of a child is defined in the Law of Maritime Transport of the Republic of Lithuania. Accordingly, if a child is born on board, the ship’s captain draws up his birth certificate. Said report must be signed, in addition to the ship’s captain, by two witnesses, the ship’s doctor or the paramedic if they are members of the ship’s crew. The birth of a child on board will be recorded in the logbook. The certificate prepared by the master of the ship will not replace the birth certificate and will be presented to the civil registry office in order to obtain the birth certificate.
