In Kaunas, in the Šilainiai district, near the Milikonių hill on Žemalės street, the construction of the old masonry, after the discovery of fragments of old masonry, stopped the Department of Cultural Heritage (KPD).

On Monday, the Kaunas branch of the CRD received a report from residents that fragments of ancient masonry had been excavated on the slope from which the Vilijampolė panorama opens.

Specialists who visited the site discovered excavated remains of brick vaulted cellars. Nearby they found a white glass fragment, a tile fragment, a square-shaped ceramic tile.

“After evaluating the structure of the masonry and archaeological finds found nearby – a fragment of a tile, fragments of a pot, a comb for drinking a glass, a tile, fragments of tiles – we assume that these may be basements from the second half of the 17th century. It is very likely that one of Kaunas suburban mansions was in this place, “said Andrius Liakas, the chief specialist of the Kaunas branch of the CRD.

Heritage conservationists contacted the director of a construction company on the site and demanded that no earthworks take place near the excavated basement fragments for 15 days.

During this time, the site will be visited by archaeologists from the Center for Cultural Heritage.

Based on your findings, a decision will be made on including the newly discovered archaeological site in the Register of Cultural Heritage.

According to the CRD report, archaeologists must report the archaeological finds discovered or the valuable properties of the property to the people who carry out the works. In this case, this was not done.

Žemalės street is not located on the territory of a cultural heritage object or area, so far there has been no knowledge of the archaeological cultural heritage object in this place.
