Lithuania’s declaratory actions towards its neighbors may turn into a conflict for which our state is not prepared. Photo by EPA-Elta
– The first decided to declare Sviatlan Cichanouskaya President of Belarus. The current people received the Freedom Prize and, at his request, talked about changing the name of Belarus. What else can we expect?
– It is difficult to predict, but with such thinkers, I believe that we can prepare for new surprises, because all that is being done now is to further incite conflict with the neighboring state. It is possible to change the name of the state without the official request of the country and without knowing the opinion of the Belarusians themselves on this issue. silly stuff. Even if the authorities came up with the idea that the president of Belarus was S. Chichanouskaya, although there is no basis for that either.
Taking this opportunity, I must remind current ministers that the word “Gudija” has long been used in Lithuania. If we call Germans Germans and Poles Poles, even though they call themselves differently, what stops Belarusians from calling Gudians?
To call our neighbors with a traditional name that we know, an analogy can be made with Germany (Deutschland) or Poland (Polska) and there will be no problems, but to create a conflict, we must behave as the current Government does.
– And how do you rate the Belarusian program broadcast by the Lithuanian Seimas in commemoration of the 13th anniversary of January?
– If the plans of our rulers are to restore Vincas Kapsukas Litbel (the Lithuanian-Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic founded by the Bolsheviks in 1919 – or. past.), this can be understood as the first step in the implementation of this project. If it is an attempt to remain angry with our neighbors, keep in mind that in politics conflicts are used for a specific purpose. In that case, it is justified. I would just like to ask our rulers: what goal are they pursuing, realizing that neither the Germans, nor the French, nor the Scandinavians, much less all the other EU Member States, will support the creation of such a conflict? There will likely be internal frictions in the United States today and for a long time to come, which will prevent us from focusing on European issues, and if Joe Biden continues with Barack Obama’s policies, they will not be interested in our relations with the Belarusians during long time.
On the other hand, this conflict will be of great benefit to Russia. I will not call what the Lithuanian government is doing, other than pouring water on the “mill” of President Vladimir Putin. With the total deterioration of the economic situation in Russia, the conflict would help to control the internal situation.
Unfortunately, our government does not want to understand this and is getting on the same rake again. Vytautas Landsbergis followed the policy of generating conflict before we damaged relations with Russia. Later, President Dalia Grybauskaitė took over the relay. His efforts were unsuccessful: Lithuania became the enemy of Russia not. 2. Gabrielius Landsbergis, the new head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, now turns in the same direction, and our president Gitanas Nausėda is apparently seriously ill, because I cannot understand the neglect of the function that was assigned to him in another way: the coordination foreign affairs.
– Alexander Lukashenko recently declared that “a war has been declared” for Belarus. It also appears that the neighbors want to acquire Russian S 400 anti-aircraft production systems. Is this a response to Lithuania’s actions?
– The bragging and his statements are directed to the internal public. The real problem lies elsewhere: the Lithuanian state does not coordinate its actions in Belarus with the NATO or EU partners. It is not part of the game in general. One Lithuania cannot exert much influence on Belarus because, as the situation has shown, the number of people dissatisfied with the Lukashenko regime and willing to fight against it is too small, and the same protesters who gather on Saturdays and Sundays as picnics they are far from being large-scale protests that could result in the current government. Therefore, the actions of our government can only be seen as a shepherd “tearing the crows’ nests”.
– If actions are not coordinated, can Lithuania expect help from partners in case of conflict?
– I will remind you that Article 5 of the NATO Treaty works when a NATO country is under attack. Only here it is necessary to understand that in case of conflict, this “dance with swords” will be remembered in Lithuania and it will be considered whether the provocative behavior led to a specific difficult situation. And even when the situation changes, Belarus will become more pro-Russian than it is today.
Perhaps the current situation can be justified by the fact that the head of the Ministry of National Defense Arvydas Anušauskas and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs G. Landsbergis are still too low to see tangible results, but looking at their activities from the side I cannot explain me. to give to Lithuania.

Military threat from neighbors
The Belarusian Defense Ministry has seen the strengthening of military measures in neighboring countries as a growing military threat. Defense Minister Viktor Chrenin provided this information to President A. Lukashenko.
Speaking about strengthening the military potential of neighboring countries, he mentioned not only Lithuania and Poland, but also Ukraine. According to V. Chrenin, these countries did not give up their claims on the territory of Belarus.
“One of the most effective means to respond to the growing military threat is strategic measures,” he said, adding that the Belarusian Ministry of National Defense had developed a “West 2021” exercise plan with the Russian military.
The exercise will take place in the territories of both countries from September 10 to 16 of this year. They are based on “a variant of the gradual escalation of the politico-military situation in the conditioned countries.”
“At the suggestion of Russia, the exercise will be carried out on the territory of the two countries using a unified operational-strategic platform. This will simultaneously address the problems of readiness for the use of regional groupings of Belarusian and Russian military forces and the deployment of military operations, “the ministry said in a statement issued by the ministry.
He also emphasizes that the exercises reflect strong Allied ties and a united approach by Russia and Belarus to ensure the military security of the Allies.
