Prime Minister Saulius Skvernelis, reluctant to participate in the debate on prime ministerial candidates organized by the public broadcaster LRT, affirms that his participation in the electoral campaign depends on the position of the party and the “principle of equality”.

When asked by journalists why he participated in the debate during the presidential election, Skvernel said that no one else could change it at the time.

“He is trying to deceive the Lithuanians and their listeners. Saulius Skvernelis participated in the presidential election campaign and no one could change or represent the presidential candidate. Today we talk about the Seimas elections, I participate in them with the LVŽS, and the party decides who and what candidate will go to debates, forums or participate in another way ”, S. Skvernelis responded to the journalist’s question on Wednesday after the government meeting.

According to the Prime Minister, the media cannot decide for the parties involved in the debate.
“I am in the electoral campaign at a time when I can pay it. If there is a decision by a party that it is necessary to go to one forum or another to debate and there is no one else to represent, I will do it. However, they are not the media, nor the LRT, who decide who will represent the political force, ”said the Prime Minister.
At the same time, the Prime Minister did not hide his outrage in the format of the debate.

“The principle of equality and the decision of the political party that will represent it in what format is an essential part of the electoral campaign. I will participate and I will do it according to the team, “said S. Skvernelis.

“They have criticized him for why the prime minister does not go on leave, why he does not resign if he participates in the presidential elections. You are now trying to “turn the platter” in another direction. I do my job, it is my priority and I do not need more publicity ”, the Prime Minister finally emphasized.

S. Skvernel: I don’t think the party should choose a candidate

A little later, the prime minister added that parties should not rush to announce their candidates for various positions before the elections.

“It just came to our attention then. We see that some political parties are already running candidates, we know that these are certainly not candidates, not in reality or even in theory, and they will not be candidates. It is a game against voters, which is not always it’s fair, trustworthy and open, “said S. Skvernelis.
According to the Prime Minister, the party should choose a candidate for Prime Minister from more than one candidate.
“I don’t think there should be a single candidate for a possible prime minister,” Skvernell said.

At the same time, he explained that his personal determination to continue in this position in the new government would depend on several key factors: the coalition, the government’s program, the priorities and the strength of the majority.

“It has been very difficult for four years to work out the balance in terms of minority governments,” the prime minister said.

“Today, trying to nominate someone for one position or another makes voters smile.” People who go and decide for themselves what kind of government they want will decide, “added S. Skvernelis.
ELTA recalls that this week the LRT launched an electoral debate. S. Skvernelis, leader of the Lithuanian Union of Greens and Peasants (LVŽS) list, did not appear in the first program of the LRT Forum. The party had identified him as a potential candidate for the post of prime minister even after the Seimas elections.

LVŽS distributed a letter, which was read by the presenter during the program. The letter does not hide outrage that the organizers did not allow another party representative to replace the prime ministerial candidate S. Skvernel. According to the party, the acting prime minister’s participation in the program cannot be guaranteed.

However, candidates from other parties for the post of prime minister participated in the program. The Liberal Movement was represented by Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen, the Labor Party – Viktoras Uspaskich, the Freedom Party – Remigijus Šimašius, the “Freedom and Justice” Party – Remigijus Žemaitaitis, the Social Democratic Party – Gintautas Paluckas and the Union of the Fatherland – Lithuanian Christian – Christian Christian.
