There is great uncertainty when vehicle maintenance and repair companies refuse to accept old tires or charge more for them.
“Drivers should remember the basic rule: garages cannot deliver unrepairable tires to their users, therefore when replacing tires in a garage old ones should be accepted free of charge. Auto repair shops and others small garages must accept as many old tires as they replace. Furthermore, auto repair shops, as well as tire manufacturers and importers, must take care that old tires are used or recycled correctly, “says A. Pakštaitė-Marcinkienė.
In cases where tire waste is generated at home, it can be taken to municipal bulky waste collection sites. They accept up to 4 or 5 unusable tires per capita per year, depending on the acceptance conditions approved by the municipalities. There are about 100 large garbage collection sites in Lithuania, and their list can be found at www.atliekos.lt.
“Old tires can also be delivered to their dealers. Tire dealers must accept old tires from the customer free of charge if they are intended for the same type of vehicle and are returned as much as purchased. Also, it is possible to call a waste manager at home, but you would have to pay for the tire removal service ”, recalls the head of the Association of Manufacturers and Importers.
Kristina Štelmokaitienė, CEO of Atliekų tvarkymo centras, says that old tires that are released into the environment decompose in only 120-140 years and, when burned into scrap metal, emit harmful substances into the environment.

“Waste handlers separate textiles, metal and rubber from old tires. Metals and rubber are used in the production of new products and textiles for energy. Recycled tire rubber is suitable for paving sports fields and playgrounds, parking safety posts, and other products such as shoe soles. Granules from old tires are also used for road construction, ”says K. Štelmokaitienė about the benefits of tire recycling.
The Manufacturers and Importers Association, which is licensed to manage taxable products (tires, filters, shocks), batteries, oil and other automotive waste, has brought together the largest manufacturers and importers of automobiles and their parts and finances collection and recycling of used tires.
According to data from the Environmental Protection Agency, in 2018, 28 thousand tons of goods were supplied to the Lithuanian market separately. tons of tires, and was collected for disposal (recycling) – 23.4 thousand. heaps. According to the calculations of market participants, another 4 thousand. tons of tires are sold illegally in Lithuania, and about 9 thousand. tons of tires enter the country each year with vehicles.
According to the laws, 80% must be collected and recycled in Lithuania. the quantity of tires supplied to the domestic market separately.
