According to Antanas Juknevičius and Darius Vaičiulis, the Kreda team crew, the first tests started in Lithuania. Dakar organizers instructed all arriving in Saudi Arabia to get tested for the coronavirus no later than 72 hours before the scheduled flight date. This is only allowed if the test result is negative, that is, no virus is found.
The tests were not fatal for Kreda’s team: all of its members were healthy and free of the virus. The Vaidotas Damage Agrorodeo crew was less fortunate, as after testing it turned out that two of the three mechanics – infected and unable to go to the Dakar Rally. The team had to search very quickly for someone to replace them.
Gintas Petraus’ Petrus Kombucha team was an even bigger failure. It turned out that co-driver Povilas Valaitis, who was going to the Dakar Rally together with G. Petri, was ill. In just half a day, G. Petrus found in his place a new co-driver, the Portuguese José Marqués.
This test is not the only one. As V. Žala said while waiting for boarding at Vilnius airport, 48 hours of self-isolation in a hotel awaits you as soon as you go to Saudi Arabia. This requirement is mandatory to avoid a possible coronavirus infection. And after self-isolation, he will await another coronavirus test, this time for the Dakar Rally organizers.
If the second test is negative, all crews can withdraw the technical, accreditation, administrative and technical commission procedures.
“We have received very clear instructions that we cannot move anywhere, neither to the store nor to the non-store. Realize paturistauti opportunities will not. In this way, not only the organizers protect themselves, but Saudi Arabia also protects itself from the Europeans, “said V. Žala.
The Dakar Rally will start with a very small section of the speed section, the so-called prologue. All runners must pass this on January 2. The prologue will be an opportunity for the locals to draw attention to the myriad of racing techniques. On Sunday, January 3, expect the usual start of the Dakar Rally and a speed range of several hundred kilometers.
The finish line of the Dakar Rally is scheduled for January 15, where the start will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Up to 7 teams from Lithuania will participate in the 2021 Dakar Rally.
