Many of the 150 illegal immigrants have already applied for asylum in Lithuania. According to SBGS, the flow of illegal migration has already increased eleven times compared to 2020, and 822 illegal immigrants have been detained to date. Last year, 81 of those foreigners were detained at the border with Lithuania. 2019 46 illegal immigrants were caught by border guards in 2018; – 104, 2017 – 72. Among those detained on the border with Belarus this year are mostly Iraqi citizens or foreigners who come forward – 481. Also detained 57 Iranians, 51 Syrians, 46 Belarusians, 28 Russians, 13 Guineans, 12 Turks, 10 from Sri Lanka and other citizens showed up. These citizenship statistics may change during surveys when the nationality of the detainees is accurately determined on the last day. Migration flows are expected to continue to increase.
Border guards are closely monitoring the situation by helicopter for the presence of large groups of migrants on the Belarusian side.
With the recent significant increase in these cases, SBGS has strengthened border security with Belarus. In addition to various organizational measures, officials from other SBGS units were assigned to this section and additional technical resources were assigned. In addition, border guards have been assisted by forces from the Public Security Service, the Union of Rifles and other institutions, and officials from the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (FRONTEX) are beginning to work on the border with Belarus. .
